Today I received three packages that I was expecting, two from other CT members, and this one. To make it a bit more interesting I'm breaking the series into three parts. Enjoy! I had a TON of trouble buying this coin. First, the seller (who was on Vcoins) had forgotten to update his shipping prices, then my order was canceled because of a misunderstanding, and finally, when I reordered the shipping was delayed three days, by a strike on the London Underground (that is why it's good to keep up to date on current events)! To top it all off, I haven't been able to take satisfactory photos of it. So, I'm using the seller's pictures. EGYPT.ALEXANDRIA.Cornelia Salonina, wife of Gallienus AD 253-268.Billon Tetradrachm, struck AD 259/60. (10.97g, 22mm, 12h). KOPNHΛΙΑ CAΛWNEINA CEB, bust of Salonina right. Reverse.Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, head reverted with wreath in beak, across field regnal year L- Z ( = year 7 AD 259/60 ). Milne 4043 Struck during the reign of Valerian (AD 253-260). I have to say, all the hassle was worth it, it even came with a Spink tag (pedigree?)!
Nice to see some new ladies posted. Nice portrait on this. I dont own any tets. of her but have come close a few times but I have issues with tets from this era on... My silver of her though. Salonina (254 - 268 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: CORN SALONINA AVG, Draped bust right, wearing stephane, set on crescent. R: VESTA, Vesta standing left, holding patera and scepter. 3.4g 23mm RIC V 39A ; RSC 137
Issues? Ya, in hand it looks like the pale green stuff on the eagle's neck might be BD. I'm not certain, so close-ups will posted sometime in the future.
Congrats, kid => so ya scored your first chick, eh? (you stud!!) Ummm geesh, hopefully you didn't catch bronze disease from your very first time!!? ... just jokes (congrats) ... yah, I don't have a sweet Tet, but I do have a nice-enough antoninianus of the lady
Nice pickup my friend. Good detail. Here is one of my favorites of Salonina: SALONINA Antoninianus OBVERSE: SALONINA AVG, diademed and draped bust right, resting on crescent REVERSE: DEAE SEGETIAE, statue of Segetiae or Ceres, nimbate, standing facing in four-columned temple, both hands raised Struck at Lugdunum, 258 AD 3.1g, 22mm RIC 5
I have faith you will be able to take a better photo. The coin has exceptionally clear legends for this empress. For that matter, Alexandria never did all that well with long legends so most of the clear ones we see were from rulers with shorter names. I'll tack on the equivalent coin from year 5 and a different reverse (Tyche) from year 14. Style changed quite a bit over the intervening years.
Thanks for all the compliments guys (and gal)! Most of the photo issue was that I received in the middle of school time, so I got enough of a break as it was. I'll try again in a bit.
nice vlaha, she great...that obverse is supper, nice legend and good detail on that sweet lookin' lady.
You got that right! I took some more photos and I think they're a bit better, but still not Doug quality! The color in these are pretty accurate to what it looks like in light cloud cover. I hadn't noticed this before, but the flan is just a bit uneven.
