Is it just me or do these values seem high? I'm just comparing realized prices on ebay for graded coins from PCGS and NGC are for the most part way lower than what they list as Fair Market Values. Where can you get realistic coin values online because even the prices on PCGS are higher than realized prices. Don't get me wrong I'm not talking about raw coins or those graded by fly by night TPGs I'm only talking about PCGS and NGC.
It's a pay site but PCGS coin facts shows recent auction results for certified examples by both PCGS and NGC and even includes eBay sales.
This is what I use. It's a good place to start when trying to figure out what to pay. http://www.pcgs.com/AuctionPrices/default.aspx
It is definitely a bit high, but it's a decent tool. I don't think any one source can give you good pricing info. I frequently use it in conjunction with the red book, blue book, and ebay listings when determining pricing.
All of the price guides online or in print just can not keep up with the actual market for their published prices. It is impossible. If many of you have not noticed by now I collect the Liberty Seated coins by major types/varieties of each denomination. Right now you can throw away all of the prices lists for the Liberty Seated coins as they are in great demand especially in problem free circulated and mint state condition. If the coin has great eye appeal you will probably have to buy that piece quick because someone else is going to snatch it up fast if you don't. The 1842 large date quarter I just arraigned to buy is a good example. The dealer I bought it from had just recently opened a web site to sell Liberty Seated dimes. Many Liberty Seated quarter collectors outside of the LSCC are not yet aware that he has a very nice inventory of the quarters also. He had this quarter listed for just a week before I committed to buying it and I told him I was surprised it lasted that long. So was he and the actual owner. In his most recent updates with new purchases many of them are sold or put on hold the same day they appear on his website. He's told me he can't find enough coins to buy to satisfy the demand right now.
I use price guides (CDN, PCGS SITE, NGC SITE, RED BOOK, VAM VIEW) with recent auction results...a coin is only worth what someone will pay. A price guide is just that...a guide.
