If anyone has ever had a coin go missing in the post, whether as buyer, or sender, they will know how annoying and upsetting it can be. Is there a site or list of coins which have gone missing anywhere? I ask, because one of the coins which never reached its destination (New Zealand) is the wildwinds pictured Hadrian coin which is holed I showed here some time ago. It is rare and very easy to spot!! I know Victor Clark has a space on his own website for coins of his which have gone missing, but didnt know if there was a database anywhere for photographs? The coin is insured and sent tracked, but it seems the thieving little 'EDIT of a postman decided he would have it anyway!! Anyone with anything unconstructive to say need not comment as I am not in the mood.
I don't know of any site like that so sorry I can't help you there. If you can't find one maybe you could start one. It's a really good idea.
How long ago did you send the package? Where was it last logged in tracking? I live in a place where packages take a long time arriving and they often drop from the radar for long and unexplained periods. Perhaps the same thing is happening with your package. There are abundant reports of packages which eventually arrive after being feared lost, so maybe there is still hope for yours. Regarding a consolidated place for advertising lost or stolen coins, like Idhair, it seems like I've come across something like that but I can't find it now. On Forvm people post such things in various places, usually in the thread corresponding to the type of coin which is missing. Perhaps a new CT category could be added under the general "Coin Talk" heading or the "Coin Forums" heading?... "Lost, Stolen, or Missing Coins".
It has been 45 days, it was sent UK to NZ, tracked and says passed to overseas postal service for delivery. Being signed for and tracked means it should at least have a location, but this is worrying. I sold it for £320 and paypal have frozen this amount and quite rightly the buyer has opened a dispute. Its not his or my fault, but damn annoying. I would like people in the coin collecting community to know its lost as its so very identifiable and will definitely get the alarm bells ringing if seen.....its pictured on wildwinds and has a hole through it! here it is!
Have you tried tracking on New Zealand's postal site or on an international tracking site such as http://www.track-trace.com/post ? Not sure how New Zealand handles incoming international package tracking, but in the US, when the international package arrives in the US you can continue tracking through the USPS rather than through the country of origin's postal site.
Don't be so sure the coin was stolen, it is not unusual for packages or letters, to get lost, stuck in a bin someplace, or just misplaced. Especially with international shipping. Your package may well turn up 2 or even 3 months from now.
Great answer, heres my story, I bought a curency note on ebay, after 30 days I filed a claim, the seller had no problem returning my money, heres the kicker, I was very honest, about 4 months later the note showed up, and I notified the seller and told him, then gave him his money back, all you can-do is hope the person is honest, and is telling the truth, good luck
i have had one coin go lost in the mail, it was one i just gave to a friend, and was only worth a few bucks probably, so wasn't a big deal. that was last summer i think. i was just talking to my mother today who received a christmas chard yesterday, posted in early december and only traveled about 300 miles. envelope was all torn up but they put it in a plastic bag and delivered. i hope you have a similar happy ending YOC.
What's the expected delay with the customs authorities? Not sure how it works in NZ but maybe you'll still get notified about that shipment...
At least once a year, I get a package from Europe, that was paid as registered, has a tracking number and takes 7 to 12 weeks to arrive. Some countries, especially those with ports or surrounded by water, still have mail deliveries going out by sea/ocean. It doesn't take much to save on registered mail and select this very slow method of shipment or for the local post to mix it up, placing the parcel on a boat instead of a plane. UK to NZ, I would expect an available ocean route.
I use the site TIF posted all the time for international tracking and I can see if the item was delivered or where abouts in transit it is. Most countries have an English version of their Track & Trace, I have recently used Russia Post and Saudi Arabia, I put my UK tracking number in their search then use Google translate to find out the result. I wouldn`t be to quick to blame Postmen/women, sometimes mail robberies occur, or vehicles carrying mail crash and burn destroying the contents. Just think what goes missing when a plane goes down !!
Terrible luck YOC especially on a coin such as that. I am hoping it is one of those 'get there eventually' packages. I currently am waiting for a coin from the States that I won four weeks ago. I believe USPS is walking it to the border. Thankfully the seller did get tracking so I am not too fussy. Plus I think I only paid 10 bucks so I am not too worried. I have also had a coin take 5+ weeks to get across Canada. I had even refunded the purchase already and then I got an e-mail from the buyer saying it had showed up and he sent me the money again.
I have had an international package arrive after 80+ days. It's good that you are being proactive, but you may simply have to wait this one out a bit more before you can start making accusations about thieving postal workers...
A few people here may remember this story from 2002: http://web.archive.org/web/20020607...gnal.com/business/mendelson/0502/051802b.html A couple of months previously, I sent an 1855-D $5 piece back to PCGS for a regrade. The coin never arrived at PCGS, and it took until September of that year to get reimbursed by the USPS insurance.
Nope, the accusations have been made....this is the second item over Christmas missing!! different countries, same service, different thieving postal workers?.
I sold a bunch of coins for a relative in January and February, and now I'm waiting for the refund requests to come in. I have probably had ten or so lost coins that I had to issue refunds for in the last two months, and one that I ordered and never received even though it had tracking. I don't know where they go. More than half of the ones lost were sent overseas (Russia, Peru, Cyprus, Malta) but a few were in the U.S. also. I don't know what happens to them. They have to be somewhere, right? It's easy to blame thieves, but if there was this much theft going on, you'd think someone would notice and these people would get fired.
Just FYI- According to sources on the Internet, stealing US mail is a federal offense. The penalty for stealing US mail may include a costly fine and jail time. The fine can cost up to $250,000 and the jail time can total to around five years.
