Ok. So I have 6 NGC graded 69 ASE 20th anniversary sets. Do you think that these sets are going to go up anytime in the next year or so, or do you think I should just sell them now? Thanks! -Paul
I don't believe that anyone really knows. I did ask my local coin dealer this question and he said that after the fad wears off in about a year, you won't be able to get what you paid for the set much less the slabbing costs. That's just his opinion but he has been in business for over 20 years selling coins exclusively.
I got 5 sets and sold 2. As it sits I have $100 in the 3 remaining sets. I'm fairly happy in this position right now. If they go up, woo. If not, no biggie. As it is, I'm very happy getting these for almost nothing. I don't know how many you plan to keep yourself, or if you just want to make a profit. I figure it's kind of like the stock market. You're never gonna time it perfectly. You'll always sell a little too soon or to late. So if you are unsure right now, sell two sets and lessen your exposure. If they go up again, you can sell another set.
considering I got shafted by the Mint's inability to get data right (and to follow up if they find a problem), I'm hoping the price comes down.
Good question. At first I thought I was going to hang on to these sets and watch the sparks fly. Now I am rethinking the whole situation. I have been reading posts on several sites by collectors who submitted sets to be graded, and being unhappy when they return less than MS-69, they break them out and return them to the original mint packaging. If the word spreads (and we know it will) then collectors may not be so willing to pay a premuim for the sets in fear of getting lesser quality coins. I was against the TPG's policy of returning the original packaging with the slabbed coins for this very reason. IMHO, we may see the time come when a collector trying to sell their original set will have to try and convince potential buyers that the coins in the set aren't "returns".
Take a peek at the greysheet bid/ask for the 20th Anniversary sets. It is more than just Ebay hype at this point.
I agree. One thing that is pushing the raw sets now is the hopes that one will get a 70 out of this and if they are lucky maybe a reverse proof in 70. The way thes sets are apparently being cherry picked, this would be very very difficult.
I am no expert on this as I generally don't speculate on coins, but I know that 1996 SEs, which are not rare by any means, command a steady premium over the others because they have a lower - but still substantial - minatge. The reverse proof is unique and even the unc. W coin may keep the price up. The unc. W is a new coin, and collectors were caught short because it came out as a single offering late in the year. If demand is high for the 2007 W coin, then that means that a lot of collectors are including that series in their collections, and there will be competition/demand for the first year coin. I think the 2006W was at about 470,000 coins - if the 2007 is twice that, for example, then there are a lot of collectors who will competing for the 2006 to keep their sets complete. I say the coin set from 2006 is a winner. I just wish I had boight more than 3 - I knew I should have but just didn't act in time.
I don't think I ever even seen these untill I seen someone post about them on here and then I looked on E-bay and seen a few....
I was just reading the post from JBK and I was surprised to see an unc W that was released late in the year from the mint. My question is.....Is this the coin that was released also in the 20th Anniversary set or is this a different coin?
Same coin. They released 270,00 in the Anniversary sets and about 200,000 as the single coin option from the mint for a total of about 470,000.
i'm no expert either but i kept 2 ase silver sets and 4 2006-w eagles. i have only cost from the mint in them so i figure i won't get hurt. 10 yrs from now will show if i made a good decision or not. they are pretty tho and even if i'm not really an eagle collector, i sure can appreciate them.
It seems like the 2006-W singles are running at about $55 dollars on ebay now, and the sets are bringing about $250 on ebay. (These are ungraded in mint packaging) But I heard that the sets were bringing $300 or more at the FUN show. I missed out on the 2006-W single and I don't know if I should buy one now or wait.
