i was at the local coin shop and was talking with the owner . i asked him about me starting to collect either silver eagles or mint sets. he showed me an album with a compleat eagle set and offered it to me for $400.00 album includer . does this sound like a reasionable price or not . i have checked other catalogs and coin mags. and it seams good to me . i am unsure about investing that much being on a fixed imcome . the dealer is very reptuable and has always been fare to me .

My dad bought a set a few weeks ago for alittle under $400---the 1996 and the earlier dates were in great shape---and the Danso <sp?> album would normaly sell for $25 or so, and the guy didn't charge for it. Speedy
This comment bothers me. I'm not sure this is an appropriate purchase for someone on a fixed income seeking an investment. I'm not in a position to judge either way, but make sure this is what you want and need.
Cloudsweeper: A very valid statement, not arguement, but statement. Only spend what you can do without, and assume that it is spent. Otherwise, you will probably be disappointed. If you just say spent money, then you can't lose.
Free advice ! Well it is free and not worh much. If you can live without the 400.00 then buy a good gold coin that will appreciate. There are plenty of hints around this informed group. If you can always get your money back it would be ok. If this is hard cash you need as a back up take it out of a bank if that is where it is and put it in a brokerage money Market at 5% + . If your keeping your money in the bank other then the everyday pocket money your going backwards. Even at 5% your still behind. Some of the modern mintage coins have been pointed out recently. Doug and others could help with a narrow band of choices.
Yeah I thought that too. One thing you could do is collect them one at a time. There's no real need to get 22 at once. You could get an album (~$20 shipped, give or take) and then fill it when you are comfortable with funds so it's not stressful. It might cost a bit more to get each one, but you might enjoy aseembling the collection as opposed to buying it all ready-to-go.
Something that I have not done is look at my little obsession (coin collecting) as an investment. If you want to collect, buy the coins that you can afford and build it thw way you want to build it. I hear rumblings about people that say that they cant afford to collect anymore because last year if you would of purchased one of everything the mint offered you would of spent like 15 grand. Thats pure silly to me. I purchase what I like and want to add to my collection. I liked the Jamestown Commeratives so I got some of them, I wont be buying the next set that is released however because they dont appeal to me. DO NOT spend money you dont have, thinking its a great investment.
