i found this small coin in Tripoli (libya) and looks like there is symbol like spartan one (v) if any one know any information please tell (note) under the symbol there is (s)
Someone may be able to correct me but didn't Spartan law forbid the minting of coins? As far as I know the Spartans never issued a coin. I am pretty sure they used iron spits. It was meant to discourage greed and hoarding of wealth.
In early times, Sparta had no coins but there are coins from later periods starting about the time of Alexander the Great (long after Sparta ceased to be a major power). Most common are the hemidrachms of the city as part of the Achaean League in the 2nd century BC. This is not any of the types I recognize.
Could it be an Alpha = A on a Byzantine nummis? They have a head on the other side which is often very weak. For example, Sear Byzantine #173.
