That made me feel my age. Especially since I celebrate a birthday next week and moving to the near end of my 40s. But, it's true. I can remember when I was 1st starting out in the early 1960s, you could still go to the bank and ask for things like Silver Dollars. I used to go to the bank with my folks on Fridays. I would bring a portion of my allowance savings, to buy coins. After a while the tellers knew me, and what I liked to collect. I got Morgan and Peace dollars, Walkers, Buffalos, SLQ's, Mercurys and wheaties by the roll! But for some reason, Jefferson War Nickels were very scarce. I think my Grandfathers generation of the time hoarded them, and some day vast hoards are going to show up on the market in BU and GEM UNC.! Those of us who lived through this heyday of coinage should count ourselves lucky. This will never happen again. Hell, there are even whole generations of kids, and some adults, who have never seen a Half Dollar or even an SBA... About 8yrs ago when I started at my Movie Theatre as a box office attendant, we had raised our rates. We went from $6.25 to $6.50 (were at $10.00 now.) Because of the rate increase we went through quarters like there was no tomorrow. We taxed the local bank supply to the point where we had to use Kennedy Halves for change. I can remember handing these to kids and them asking what it was, and if it was real or a token!!!! This happened again in 1999 with the influx of SBA's just before the glut of the SAC's. Thanks for letting me ramble... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I find it odd that in my lifetime that the current set of coins is the only thing which remains strangely unchanged. The entire map of Europe and Africa has changed and the USSR has been destroyed but a washed out protrait of Washington is still staring at me on a quarter. Change is needed and I'd like to help make some change. Randy
I too would agree with a change, but there are too many interest groups to contend with: both for and against. Look at all of the hub-hub over the recent nickel changes. Then what would we change the designs too? The ACLU would be all over any changes. For me, I would support people/events that changed our nation...
Although I feel there's a high probability that they'll screw it up, I think coins such as the 2005 Jefferson Nickel show that they can take some of the older concepts and successfully rework them (unless you mean pick new presidents, etc.)
Hi, You may not like the modern US coin designs, but to be honest, there's not much you can do (other than complain on internet chat rooms) about it. If you want coins. or bullion, with discontinued designs, you have ample oportunity to get them. They are everywhere. The US Mint is your candy store. I wrote my congressman when the nickel was in question, I asked him to vote in favor of keeping Jefferson and Montecello on the five cent coin.He agreed. You folks have the same oportuninty. I believe your efforts would be better directed elsewhere.
that Jefferson portrait is terrific, but the 2006 is such a low quality image that it makes me cringe.
I don't care where I'm from. friend. I would have voted to keep Franklin on the Half, if I'd had the oportunity. So, what's your point?
Personally, I think change is good. Isn't that what made this country to begin with? For years coin collecting languished, except for the diehards (myself included) , until the introduction of the state quarters program. A new design, a new approach is now opened up to scrutiny every few months. Not every 10 years, not every 5 years, not every year but every few months and it has created a renewed interest in the hobby. Some argue that the designs are awful, some love them, some don't care one way or the other. What's so bad about that? Coin talk wouldn't even exist without this renewed interest. The mint could still be producing the Morgan, or the Peace, or the Liberty. Is that what I want to see? I don't think so. Were they great coins? Of course they were. Were there some bad designs? Of course there were. Is beauty in the eye of the beholder? Of course it is. That's what makes this a great hobby. I could ramble on and already have, but having collected for 50+ years I consider this an exciting time. Some of it is silly, some I consider nonsense, but when the dust settles............MMMMMMMMM.....now let me see....if I could find a South Dakota "D" mint I could .................
Yeah, I'm with you on that. They went from one of the most striking new and different designs to something that errr... I'll be nice... something I'm not fond of.
change please I look at the coins of the past and see the wonderfull artwork on them. Todays coins have mere portraits. What happened to new coins about every 25 years. We don't have to copy old designs, but we sure could take inspiration from them. I would like to see ben franklin back on a coin, but in general historical figures should be on commems. Well thats my 2 cent piece worth.
I agree with others it is time to upgrade the coins at least on the obverse. I would like to see a series of coins featuring indian chiefs, could be a great series if it happpened.
So if people want a change in our coinage ,who has earned the right by there good deeds in history to be placed on this new coinage ? Should it be someone that is currently living or someone who has passed on should it be a man or woman who should it be and what has this person done to earn this right just asking for opinions. BRUCE.
Liberty!! I think we should go back to different renditions of liberty on the obverse and an eagle and shield on the reverse.
We can have many symbols of America on new coin obverses. Some ideas include th Twin Towers, The Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, The Statue of Liberty, the Saturn Rocket, Iwa Jima, Sadam Hanging, The Capital Dome, Th Golden Gate Bridge, a 1963 Chryler Imperial, Sandy Koufax, The Passinger Pigeon and the Carolina Parakeet, A Grizzly Bear, et al Ruben
http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=20657 Thats the link to the origianl letter I wrote. I hope we can do something or we might be stuck with these same basic designs for the rest of my short life. Ruben
I think the first thing that needs o be done is that maybe some new design ideas need to be meeted out with a small group to colese some support behind. As such I'd suggest for the follwoing denominations: $1.00 coin - Statue of Liberty front and the Grizzly Bear in Brown on the reverse $0.50 Coin - An Art Deco image representing enterprise and commerce on the front and a white Capital Dome on the reverese $0.25 - Iwa Jima with a red white and blue flag on the front and the tomb of the unknow soldeir in the back $0.10 - An alagorical portrait justice with scales on the obverse and Pikes Peak in snow cap blue and white on the reverse $0.05 - The Twin Towers in steal silver on the front and the American Oak Tree on the reverse $0.01 - a new portrait of Lincon on the front and a horse with a fleeing slave on the back In addition, I'd add a new $5.00 coin with Horace Greeley on the front and a Free Press on the back Those are my ideas. Ruben
I'm sorry but if we go pushing our Gov. for change they might just give us change---and change that we don't like----our coins aren't bad right now, they aren't good, but they aren't bad either..... Speedy
I'm still trying to figure out why they changed the nickel so many times! 5 times in 3 years and I still rarely see any of them in change. That is what concerns me about people trying to save these modern coins as possible investments. There are way too many being minted and they will eventually come out of the closets.
