I got this old set in a "us mint snap case" I started to take a look closer. 1st pic my penny Second is an example of a sms. Clear 18 steps on reverse. 5 cent sms on pcgs Web site states only sms 5 cents has stairs on the outer side of building and squiggly lines in the small box's next to the dome, I know it's a long shot but check them out. Much diff from the proofs I have. . Does anyone know of die markers?
Sorry not true. 1964 sms sets are being certified by pcgs. They are thought to be prototypes of 1965 sms
A quick question. Does anyone know if the 64 SMS quarter had the Type A or Type B reverse (or even the Type C for that matter)?
Good question. If it did happen to be a A or C, that could narrow down the possibilities. You would know it isn't a proof strike.
You are aware that the plastic case the 1964 set is in is not a mint product? It looks like a Capitol holder in which someone not affiliated with the mint filled up with 1964 dated coins.........either proof or uncirculated.
The Washington's have the Type A Reverse. All three that are on the PCGSCoinFacts Website share the exact same circular die scratches between the last fold in Washingtons Hair and the ribbon. At first glance, I thought the coin I had pulled up had a severe scratch. BUT, the same scratch appears on all three coins. The Kennedy SMS Coins has a little die chip off the 4 in the date in addition to die scratches from polishing. None could ever be mistaken for a proof as the proof of the era had mirrored/flat fields. The SMS coins all have the crisp strike of a proof but with visible die scratches from polishing in the fields. These are unmistakable.
