Here's a toned Lincoln with a weak "O" on the reverse and some weakness in "Pluribus." I've seen weak Os like this in quite a few Lincolns and it doesn't seem to be limited to any one year. Does anyone know exactly what causes this? I generally try to avoid these but I liked the color on this cent. Thanks.

 

The weakness in the O and PLUR area is due to metal flow issues. If you flip the coin, you'll notice this area is directly opposite the shoulder/bust area which takes a lot of metal to fill the die.....this shorts the reverse die and it doesn't fill all the way.

If you read Lincoln history, you'll see the Mint lowered the relief of the shoulder area a few times to get rid of this problem.

Another artifact of "die filling" you'll see with Lincolns is on the actual shoulder, which often doesn't get fully "pressed" into the die. This results in minute scratches in this area. We typically like to call these "planchet marks", i.e. they were on the planchet and the striking pressure was insufficient to smooth them out. These scratches also manifest themselves on the jaw, cheek, forehead and around the O and MER on the reverse and in the fields around these areas.

 

Awesome, thanks for the explanation. I didn't realize that the very light scratches on the shoulder were a result of not being fully pressed. Always thought those were a result of the coin getting scratched or rubbed while in transit. Thanks!

 

Hi everyone. It has been awhile since I posted. As a Lincoln collector from the time I was a kid there was one coin that I always wanted and that was the 1955 DDO. I was very fortunate to acquire this coin recently. Out of 3149 coins that NGC has graded they have graded a total of 31 in MS65. That is 14 in brown, 14 in red brown and 3 in red. NGC has only graded 2 in MS66 1 in red and this example in MS66RB making it 1 of only 2 that NGC has graded MS66 with none graded higher.. This coin has taken on some nice toning and has been well preserved in the red brown state. The doubling is some of the best you will ever see. The reverse as well has toned nicely and is well struck. I hope you all enjoy this once in a life time coin for me.

The 2014 ANA Money Show kicked off today in Atlanta, GA. The main show will start on Wednesday. I will be displaying some of my modern mint state Lincoln's at the show. That is a sweet DDO and Robec's Image is very impressive. I want be attending the show but I hope you post pictures. I would also like to know if you have a web site or registry album I could look at? I love Lincolns especially the ones that are worthy of a Robec Image.
