So it looks like I have to go to Madison WI in July sometime for some training for work. Just curious what are some must see places to visit on my one day off. Also are there any great coin shops to stop in at and take a look?
Great shops, no not really. Jim's coins on midvale is about the best selection. Madison coin in Park street. Bobs a great guy, shop is a disaster and he is more into cards. University coin hit and miss limited selection Civiatas limited us coins more into world/midevil/ancients Pm me if you want more info
I spent a long weekend in Madison about a year ago -- searched high and low online beforehand to find something worth looking at. I ended up hitting a coin store in the basement of a trashy mall (across from a hair salon) -- and I regretted every minute of it. I wish you better luck, but there didn't seem to be much worth seeing.
If it were me, I would visit Jim's Coins and pick up my latest auction purchase while there. Here is a link: www.jimscoins.com/
Brandon that would be Jim's Coins , unfortunately its the better one in town. His help is substandard but its his family and he won't say to them. And he's rarely there.
good selection of coins? any currancy? And any thing else to see in Madison or great places to stop and have a good dinner?
Well I'm headed there in a couple of weeks I'll have to stop by Jim's and take a look. I'll be staying some where around the Capital building, hope its not too far. I'll have to map quest it once I'm there.
Jim's is not a bad shop. Its a bit small and difficult to find, but I found some fair deals and a very nice 1847 large cent in xf condition with great problem free surfaces and detail for $70. Overall it was a good stop on my trip. I loved the campus and the brats and curds with a good beverage. Great town to visit.
The last time I visited the shop I bought a SBA missing clad layer. It has a great copper-color obverse.
