Mechanics of the minting process

I'd like to go beyond the kindergarten versions in the coin books. Is there an archived thread or good Internet resource that could provide me with more detail on the mechanics of the minting process? I have specific questions but it probably wouldn't pay to ask them until I at least consulted a good source on this. Thanks.
