I have an 1945 mercury dime and I noticed a 1945 D dime is worth considerably more. May I ask why? Thanks in advance.
A 1945 Mercury Dime and a 1945D Mercury Dime have about the same value in average condition. If we're talking MS, I look at strike quality and full bands. A quick check of Numismedia has a 1945D MS 60 FB at $8. A 1945 MS 60 FB is $870. I'm still working on my grading skills, and I believe you should too
As 132 stated, it's the difference of the dime being designated a FB or not, even though the 45D had the lowest production number that year, with 40,245,000.
Thank you both for your responses. Now I'm really confused. LOL! Kidding.... I guess I get the general grading etc, but when I go to a place that gives, like you have given a general price range and then let's say I go to Ebay and someone has the same coin for sale maybe 10 times the value I just seen. Now I get that you add the grading expense to the value of the coin, but I don't see what they are seeing. Is it just the demand of the coin? Some coins I have seen on Ebay are in worse condition than the one I may have but may have an error. One that needs an microscope, but an error none the less. lol. Just trying to learn and I know I will ask stupid questions along the way, but Pops always told me that'd be the way I learn. Thanks again.
