I think this is the oldest note I have received in change. I have received a few older notes from the bank but it's different when you ask for them. I had purchased a few coins at a LCS and got this as part of my change. Well worn but it is a series 1950A.
Here's one I received in change around a decade ago, not as old but definitely interesting. I'm surprised it circulated for as long as it did.
I got another old $10 today at the bank. A 1950c star note in excellent condition. Any idea of value? Thanks.
That is an amazing find! What bank is this? In CU, book value is $250. Real market you'll probably get $125 to $150 for it raw. If you can get it graded, and it comes back 64 or 65, you'll be looking at 200+.
Are you serious??? I was a bit surprised she gave me a star note that old. A while ago I had to talk her into selling me a red seal $2. It wasn't even in that great of shape. I was sure it was worth more than face, though (1950, great condition, and a star note). It was a Wells Fargo I check when I'm in the area. I mostly ask for coin but am happy I asked about notes today.
As serious as it gets. San Francisco (L) stars are from a relatively short print run and 1950C was scarce to begin with. Combine that with the condition and the value soars. You cleaned up nicely. That teller sounds like a dick. I can't imagine that note coming through in CU without any others. Check out to see if she has any more, then rub your win in her face. I had a teller yesterday tell me a lady came through with sequential $500's. She said the bank couldn't take them because they were no longer in circulation. Then after the beat down, some guy offered to buy them from her (probably for face value). What a load of ship.
I didn't think to ask if there were others. I would make sense that there were. I wouldn't thinks that just one bill like that would come in... who knows. I'm not one to make to much of a stink on this kind of thing. I was just happy she offered anything. Thanks for the info btw.
What would the fees be if I sent it for grading. If I have a dealer do it... $30? Never had a note graded before.
Between $40 to $50, depending on your turnaround time of 28 or 14 business days and if the dealer submits notes in bulk. The cost includes shipping charges. Submitting directly requires a $30/year membership to either PCGS or PMG. I wouldn't send it in at all unless you are sure it is uncirculated. It won't be worth the cost of it comes back less than say 55. It's sometimes hard to see the difference between a 63 and a 58. One trick is to shine a bright white light at a low angle over the note. It should help bring out hidden folds and handling. The note may have some natural paper wave or uneven texture. That's normal and won't hurt the grade. If the note feels very flat, it was likely pressed to make the handling less evident. A pressed note will cost you a valuable PPQ/EPQ designation.
