Not sure what you are seeing on the dime. It just looks worn to me. The Lincoln obverse has big spot of zinc rot that has eaten through the copper layer. Happens a lot with post-82 zincolns.

So I take it the "P" is just worn down and over on the dime? I have never seen that on a penny. Thanks for the info Furryfrog02. Much appreciated. I hear a lot that a coin should never be cleaned. If one needs to be to identify it, what would you suggest. Thanks in advance. Have a great day.

Yeah the P looks like it has been worn a bit and also took a hit on the top left corner.

You should see some of the Lincolns I have pulled over the last year. Abe looks like he has leprosy from all the zinc rot all over his face :)

As for cleaning, I have been lucky and never had anything that was so nasty I couldn't identify it. I have had some that had big chunks of crud on them and I am of the mindset that if they already have that on them and they have been in circulation that I might as well just pick it off with a toothpick or something else...Prolly not the answer you(or others on this forum) want to hear! :)
I've heard soaking it in acetone or distilled water will help get stuff off but I've never personally tried it.

I'll let someone with more experience in that field give you a better answer :)

Do you have a link or something to what you are talking about? It looks like a normal worn dime to me. Always looking to expand my knowledge.
