Has anyone heard anything about the mint putting out gold Kennedy coins for an anniversary It's not on the mint product schedule I took a few minutes and took the mints poll it was mentioned in that poll saying would I buy them if for sale this year. I guess they are being minted for 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half
wow. if this is the route they take, i may have some respect left for the US Mint. like a fractional gold kennedy set? that would be epic in my book.
Well, you can buy gold plated 2013 Kennedy halves.. there's plenty to choose from on eBay, lol: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/gold-jfk-half-dollar
It's a great idea, but I think that it'll be so great an idea that they would never have any aftermarket value higher than spot.
Well, I'd personally much rather have the 50th set be silver not gold.... I can't afford gold and also silver makes much more sense considering the series lineage.
i always wondered about that coins that are initially minted as commems like spouse series end up being bullion coins like you said rick same with these if it happens. the more i think about it i remember poll saying small mintage about 50k and price i think around $1200 little high considering size of coin but i think i'd spring for one they would go quick i think
man i want to see this poll. if someone happens to be prompted and could post the poll questions i would appreciate it. i am signed in and playing on it and not getting asked.
i dont think they would do a full ounce. i think it is going to be a reverse proof gold half dollar, just like a half dollar 90% silver 1964 half dollar, but instead of silver, it is gold, which is .3617 oz gold, and a reverse proof silver half dollar, which is .3617 oz silver. and probably a burnished, West Point W mintmark, a san fransisco S mint mark Proof, and a regular, no mintmark 90%....so maybe 5 coins?
I'm not sure what you have in mind here. A gold coin the same diameter and thickness as a half dollar would weigh something like 0.8 ounces. Gold's more than twice as dense as silver.
I hope they don't go the gold route. I'm getting close to completing my Kennedy set and that would make it very difficult to complete...
I recall thinking when the Buffalo dollar was being discussed back in the late 1990s that reproductions of the Buffalo nickel in silver and done in the original size would have been outstanding. Perhaps it is better that this never happened, but I think it would have been mighty cool.
I was thinking they would be same size as the Kennedy halves anyway in the poll it actually quoted a price because that was part of poll I guess finding out who will be likely to buy these coins
Ugh! I think this is a bad idea as Gold Coins are generally smaller than standard issue coins. Meaning, a $5 or $10 gold Kennedy simply will not fit into my album. And since I am the ONLY US Mint customer, I disapproved! Now, on a serious note, I would think a 90% Silver Cameo Proof (already in US Mint inventory), an SMS coin and a Reverse Proof Kennedy would be a very nice set.
Besides the gold coin, the poll also suggested two sets were being considered: 1) a clad set with a coin from all four mints each with a different finish (the S coin would not be a proof, the P and D coins would not be business strikes). 2) a 90% silver set similar to the clad set.
I actually bought one of these a while back and was sort of disappointed in it. First of all, the gold plating must be super thin because sitting it next to a Gold Eagle, the gold color just doesn't look right. Second of all, I didn't notice until after receiving it but for some bizarre reason it has an additional date-stamp on it that did not come from the mint and it slightly warped the coin front and back because of it.
