I did not bid on this slabbed trade dollar; good decision or not?

I don't know, I hope not. I try to get informed on fakes before they hit ebay. Those pics are from a website I'd rather not mention, sure most of you know what site I'm talking about.

JUST BUY a freakin' Trade Dollar from a reputable dealer that is problem free slabbed, and stop the equivocating. Stop looking for bargains and pay the price for a nice coin.

I'm not saying you go this way , but I won this at Heritage a few years back . I had the feeling all she needed was a quick dip . Turns out I was right , though not my best TD it is one of my faves and is currently retoning very slowly in a manilla envelope . If you want to go cheap this is one way to go .

As much as I value your opinion and that of Morgandude11, both of you please feel free not to respond to any more of my posts.

I'm trying to learn and get a decent deal for my money. Forgive me for offending your patience.

    There. We are done.

I don't think there are really deals out there. The one Morgandude got for a great price was from someone he worked with (likely bought from and sold to) for many years.

Think it will be hard to buy a nice coin for two to three times less then it's worth, but good luck!:)

Doug, with all due respect, he is trying to give you the education, however, you just don't seem to want to believe him.

Fact: The Trade Dollar is one of the most highly counterfeited coins of all the U.S. Coins. Why do you think that is? In my mind, it's simple, DEMAND. It's a highly sought after coin and the prices in the market reflect that demand.

Fact: Not only are the coins counterfeited, now there are examples of fake coins in FAKE slabs. Trusted dealers and big auction houses know how to spot these.

Here's what you have to decide: Do I want a genuine example of a Trade Dollar OR do I want to find a deal. In many other series, finding a deal is easier; however, if you want a nice example, chances are, it's already been graded and in a TPG holder.

I also want a Trade Dollar, but I will be buying one already graded by either NGC or PCGS. I'll also be buying it from either a trusted dealer or one of the big auction houses. I will NOT be looking to eBay for this particular coin.

In making the decision to own a Trade Dollar, I've already decided I will be paying FMV for the coin. If I try to get a "deal", I might actually be buying a counterfeit.

For around $275-375 from ha you can buy a nice au example from ha among other places it won't be a "deal" but unless you get carried away you'll get a nice coin that will hold its value and you'll have no buyers remorse on the onlly thing that might hurt is writing the initial check but trust me it's worth it the enjoyment you'll get from having a really nice coin will be money well spent

    Thanks for the polite response.

I truly don't mind paying FMV, regardless of how I sound. I finally got my Greysheet, so I think I'm good on that point. I just don't want to get snookered.

I have contacted every local dealer, just about every person recommended to me on this board and almost all of the vendors recommended, and *no* one has a problem-free coin that I like for under $500. My budget started at $100, then doubled, then creeped to $300, etc.

It's not that I don't believe those two guys (I didn't at first, not completely). I think it is wise for me to understand *why* these coins are no good (eBay, Unslabbed, etc.)

It's a learning process and I'm just learning too slowly for Morgandude11 and Mainebill. That's fine. I just don't need the drama.

I hope you can understand that I mean no disrespect when I say that maybe a trade dollar is just out of the budget right now? If you saved a couple hundred more, it would probably open your options up to really find one you like and not have to settle for a coin just because it fits your budget. As much as you have shown your desire to get yourself a nice trade dollar, the extra couple hundred won't mean much once you get it. Good luck and I can't wait to see your first one!

Look I can understand you being patient and taking your time what I've gotten a bit frustrated is that you seem to gravitate to problem coins cause their cheaper Were trying to keep you from making the same mistake I've made and most of the rest of us here have made when I started getting real serious about coins a few years ago and hadn't really kept up with values and also not worried so much about problems I bought a bunch of problem coins cause they were cheaper now I wish I didn't own them I'm sure ill end up losing money on them cause they weren't a good investment then or now compared to many of the coins I have now these cleaned scratched damaged or just low grade coins seem pretty poor I'm speaking from experience and just trying to keep you from regretting it down the road that's all

When I was on a trade dollar kick a year or so ago I noticed that nice examples were bringing full greysheet and above not far above but you always had to pay a bit extra problem and cleaned ones went cheap this was at heritages weekly sales I haven't looked lately as I don't want to tempt myself as I don't have the extra money to spend I did notice over the last year that good trades were getting fewer and farther between and the prices may have gone up a bit more my advice keep saving and wait until you find a real beauty and grab it

Fact--it is an expensive coin in nice condition. Fact--even common dates go for high dollar prices. Fact--education is good, but sometimes one can educate themselves right out of buying something. Fact--coin collecting is an expensive hobby---"g00d deals" are rare, and bargains are usually just that--poor coins that sell for poor prices commensurate with the price. Nobody was trying to insult you, Dougmeister--this was some gentle kidding around from some experienced collectors who were just trying to educate you in a humorous way.

You picked one of the most difficult series to collect---it is a high dollar effort to get attractive and decently priced coins, due to the fact that so many Trade Dollars (estimates as high as 90%) are either "Made in China," or damaged beyond the ability to grade. So, I am sorry that you got your nickers in a twist, and apologize for the humor that was a bit caustic, but we've all been through this. Coins are expensive, and sorry if your ego was offended by some well-meaning joking around. I did show you some nice coins from honest dealers, and the rest is up to you, dude. I do wish you can find a nice coin at an attractive price, but that is your business, and forgive me for meddling.
