Give it to you? That's nice. I'd say it's at least worth $50 in that condition. Never argue with free...
It definitely has some value. The 1896 series silver certificates...also known as "education notes" are among the post popular and highly collected of US paper currency. With the missing corner...it is definitely a problem note. I don't think I would personally pay $50 for this note, but someone would. I think $20-$35 is certainly the reasonable value range. With problem pieces, value can be hard to determine.
I've seen educationals with serious problems sell for even higher. As Camaro said, it's hard to valuate. It could sell anywhere from $20 to $100+. But certainly the $5 offer was ridiculous.
I've been looking at some currency lately but that stuff is expensive for nice looking pieces. I can't bring myself to spend more than like $150 on a piece of paper money. Any suggestions on some older, attractive US currency in that price range? For instance a graded Black Eagle seems like it would be about right in decent shape for $150.
The 1914 series of $5, $10 and $20 large size notes are quite attractive and can be had in decent grade for under $150. The 1918 $1 (eagle back), the 1917 $1 and $2 legal tenders can also be had in mid grade at that price range.
Thanks guys, that gives me something to research and work on. Ive seen some beautiful notes, but every time i check the price its out of my range. This helps me and directs me where to look. Thanks so much!
