Just picked up 2 rolls of Half dollars. One roll was almost exclusive 1976 and the other mixed date clads. One in this roll caught my eye. As I know NOTHING about mint errors I thought I might look for some feedback. Found it a little odd that the damage is in the same place on both sides and that it is so deep without much mushrooming on the edge. No loss if it is post mint, just haven't seen anything like it. I don't know about the damage, when I first started going through rolls of halves I would sort them by date and mint then go through the ones I wanted to look closer at and restack as I got done, then re-roll by the stacks so what that means is alot of the re-rolled coins would be rolled by date and mint. so whoever came in after me to buy rolls would emedietly know that they were already searched...maybe John
Darryl, It is Post Mint damage! If the area on the Obverse was Struck Thru something during the minting (striking) process, then the details in the area on the Obverse would not be smushed out.
Thanks Frank, - I appreciate the reply... What ever happened - happened to both sides, at the same time, and with a ton of force. Not sure what could gouge a coin like that. Johndo - the coins sorted may explain why one roll had mostly 1976's and the other had none. I spend them to keep them in circulation. SOmething to keep in mind when I get rolls. Best Regards Darryl
