I own a couple of platinum coins from the Isle of Man and you know what? Nothing special about them except that they're pretty expensive bullion coins. I would really go with Tom B's advice from post #20 which in my opinion was the best advice given.

While my forst experiences with "coin collecting" began at about 9 or 10 in searching through penny jars, I can honestly say that I never began devoting any real timer to the hobby until I was in my mid 50's.

Coin Collecting (both buying and selling) requires disposable income which usually does not appear until after the kids are grown and the job situation is working towards retirement.

Youth? Sure, youth is needed but absolutely not required since few "youth" actually read the news to see that some rare half dollar just sold for $189,000 or some nickel recently sold for $6 million. Instead, their reading about the latest video game/fashion trend/or hot musical group!

Sooner or later, folks with the tendency to accumulate and order things end up as coin collectors. With today's internet, a lot of them entertain thoughts of actually dealing if for no other reason than to pay for their collecting interests.

Old in Body but Young in Heart. The "youth" of America is firmly involved with coin collecting and that's all of us old kids!

I think there is also the 'recognize' factor. If a person has heard about a coin but have never seen one, they will be more inclined to purchase than a relatively unknown one. Since I like varieties, I went for the the 72/72 Die 1 Lincoln, 3 L 1937D Buffalo, the 55/55 DDO Die 1 lincoln , and the 1960 D/D DDO sm. /large date cent, all visible with the naked eye. For $1000 you can get a high grade 72/72 , and most are surprised by the amount of separation, large for the price.
