Special Labels Count

My apologies if there is a thread on this already. I searched but did not find.

Anyway, I have noticed that certain graded coins sell for more than the same coin with same grade (and same grading company too!) solely due to a different label. I personally think it's ridiculous, but the market is what it is.

So my question is... are the actual number of labels released counted. If so where does one go to find this information?

I just emailed PCGS on this. I will post their reply after receiving it.

I'd be very surprised if any of the (major) grading services keep track of this absurdity. If they don't bother to keep track of error coins by type, why should they count their labels?

It's possible to figure out a date range for a label and yes, some do bring a stronger price. PCGS won't help you with that information. Some of the early labels bring more because there were few of them made or because they are thought to be under graded due to changes in standards. That's the short answer.

I think he is referring to specially designed labels. For example, the NGC "winter scene" label, the NGC presidential/famous dead men faces labels, or maybe the PCGS label with the red white and blue draping. These are not associated with a generation of slabs but are specially given to some bulk submissions and others. I can't fathom why they would track that information.

IDK about numbers, but for the most part I see these "special" labels as just a waste. However, I do/did like the PCGS "signature" series (pic of prez and signature on front label) though not something I would collect as a full set, I like them a lot for my type set.

If there is a choice, I buy the plainer the label the better. It's for information only.

I agree: Semi-Relevant Short Story follows...

I worked at a car dealership many moons ago, for a couple of months. A guy came in wanting to trade in his car. We offered him what we thought was a fair price, but he was angry because blue book was still $1500 higher than our offer. We were like, "We understand that sir, but unfortunately the blue book didn't take into consideration that the car you are trying to trade in is Bright Purple!"

In other words, It's a heck of a lot easier to sell a black car than a purple car, and I suspect it's a lot easier to sell a coin in a clean, unscratched, good looking slab than otherwise,,, no matter what any book tells you.

I don't even keep track of all the weird specialty labels anymore (There are just too many of them.). I just lump all of them into the Novelty Slab catagory
