I'm being redundant as I posted dealer images of these a few weeks ago, but we've got a bright sunny day out here in Amish country, so I bundled up like an eskimo and trudged out into the snow with my copy stand and camera, braving the nine-degree temperature to take some shots. Of course I don't expect Steve to have any sympathy, but the rest of you can admire my fearless pursuit of the numismatic arts. The first is Constantine I, unlisted in RIC for the combination of officina and Sol with spread chalmys. The next two are brothers from different mothers, with mint marks PLG and SLG. They could all use some cleaning, but I'm too lazy and I rather like the colorful contrast between the three. Got any coins from Lugdunum? Let's see how many different mint marks we can post.
Here's my Nero from Lugdunum, no mintmark (but teh globe at the base of his neck confirms this coin is from there):
Great lookin' coin's JA...i'll just post one of mine.... Tiberius...14 - 7..AD.. "Tribute Penny" Ar denarius.. Ob. Laureate bust right.. Rev. Livia as Pax, seated right on throne, holding long scepter and olive branch, chair legs ornamented.. Mint. Lugdunum 18mm x 3.24 g.
Here is a siliqua of Constantinus III, struck in Lugdunum. This coin seems to have a slightly different legend than examples I have found in acsearch, but appears to be genuine. It is slightly ragged, and I suspect a small part of the planchet has broken off, but I only paid 60 euros for it as part of a larger lot. Siliqua, Lugdunum 408-411, AR D N CONSTAN – TINV(S) P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust r. Rev. Roma seated l. on cuirass, holding Victory on globe and reverted spear; in exergue, SMLD.
VK I'm totally in the dark about these, are siliqua silver issues? Aren't silver issues of the Constantine family mildly scarce?
Definitely an amazing score right there. As a passionate collector of this era, Constantine III is one of my dream emperors to obtain. Very nice pickup!
Yup, 95% or so of silver, but almost paper thin. Even the most common siliqua types are scarce, and usually start from $50 and above.
Nice coins JA. And you're braver than I. There is no way I would be taking pics in that kind of weather.
Oh dear. People will hate me if I start killing this thread with my coins. I have a real soft spot for Lugdunum and have bought more than 500 coind from this mint over the years. Somewhat surprisingly, my limited collection of 43 coins has 7 coins minted in Lugdunum (including my avatar). All have been posted here before, so probably no point in posting them again.
