I'm on Oahu for a week and was wondering if there are any good shops to check out. I like places with big junk bins to dig through and a good selection of world coins. Thanks!
McCully Stamp & Coin has junk tubs, but I've never actually looked in them. I would avoid Hawaiian Island Stamp & Coin. If you're willing to go a bit out of your way, Alii Coins & Currency is pretty good, and you can stop by Dean's Drive In for good eats while out there.
NGC lists four dealers within 8 miles. http://www.ngccoin.com/services/dealer-listing.aspx Anytime someone wants to locate dealers in any area where they me be traveling, you can go to the NGC Home Page, click on "Locate Dealers" at the top of the page and type in the city/state in question. Chris
Of the four, only Ali'i is an actual storefront. Captain Cook is an online dealer, but I think he used to have a store front in the 80s.
I ended up visiting Ali'i & got a few coins off of their bid wall (the bids closed last month after my tan had already faded & I got a happy reminder of my visit to Hawaii). They didn't really have any stock I was interested in buying while I was there, but the employees were polite & what they did have was well laid out.
I'm glad you got something, but that's disappointing about their stock being diminished. Did you at least get to visit Dean's for food?
Sure did. Had a bunch of Hawaiian / Korean bbq fusion while I was out there. Outside of the resorts, food prices weren't nearly as ridiculous as I remember from my last trip (as a kid, with my parents picking places).
