Liberty or Bust! I am taking a trip this weekend to Sin City and something is wrong with me because I am hoping to spend some time in local coin shops. So I am wondering if any of you know of a good coin shop to visit? A good shop is so hard to find it seems, so rather than roll the dice (pun intended) and hope I find quality, I figured I would ask you as many of you may have found yourselves in said coin shop even with debauchery around every corner. So yeah. Looking for interesting inventory and a friendly staff. Ready.... Go!
Good luck, Swine! I hope you hit a nice jackpot and then roll into one of those shops ready to make some deals.
LOL! I'm a big fan of Pawn Stars (even though its obviously fake) so naturally everytime I'm in Vegas I stop there. And yuppp...every time I stop, I say never again. There honestly isn't anything in their shop that strikes a chord in me. All of the silver/gold/coins have an incredble mark up. Their business they have now is more from merchandise (t-shirts/hats/cups/etc). Still worth a trip however, be prepared to possibly stand in a line outside.
Vegas is basically my front yard. The shop I go to the most is Sun City Coin, but depending on where you're at it may be a long drive as it's in the very northwest valley in Summerlin. Sahara Coins used to always be a neat place, but I'm not sure if they're even still open now with the owner's illness.
Yea Gold & Silver pawn shop is fun to visit but every single coin they have in there is a huge markup. When I was there I did buy that old man coin when silver was around $30-32 and they were charging $60 for it but I wanted it so I paid the outrageous premium. They did the chumlee coin but they want $70 for that even though silver is now in the low 20's, not sure I could get myself to bite twice on that premium. All there other coins were so high it wasn't even funny. Half there shop is now merchandise for Pawn Stars and the other half is overpriced goods. Don't expect to see Rick, the Old Man or Chum working the only time they work is when they are filming and if they are filming the store is closed and or with a 2 hour line to get in.
I live in Vegas. You will find better deals on tpg coins on eBay then in Vegas. The local guys just mark up too much
The sun city coin guy is a bit unusual. I take my coins mostly toned to the Vegas shows and every year I forget his name and who he is until he starts looking through my coins. He tells me every time that toning is meaningless and that he can buy toned Morgans in pcgs/ngc through the cce ms 64 for $60 each. Then he gets mad at me when I won't sell for grey ask. Literally . Last show I sat down and started showing his younger assistant (his son I think but not sure) was very interested in buying and was pulling coins out of my pcgs/ngc boxes until the guy turned around and almost started yelling at me that he could buy nice toned coins at cce bid since he was a member. I'm tempted to tell him I'll buy all of those cce super nice toned coins he says he can get from cce at bid. Just one guys experience
After over 100 trips to Vegas, I have bought 3 coins. Two of those were at a show I just happen to catch. I went to a lot of shops over the years but the prices just didn't work for me. I do better working with a dealer I know. It would be fun to make one of the PCGS shows. Some cool folks show up there.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I did thinks I can't talk about here. I will have to join a different forum for that.
Indeed I did. I stayed at the Luxor. Hit a couple pawn shopped and found some bullion. Nothing special.
The Vegas coin show is coming up in April! We could make a real party out of it, then! Junior Numismatist, Alhambra Coin Center lifeatthecoinshop.wordpress.com
Yeah, for a week or so the forum is nothing but crickets. Assuming those crickets weren't in vegas and witnessed our debauchery.
