I have used them to, and for the most part I like them. However they are selling GSA Morgan that are being put together by con artist and auctioning them off as original unsearched. These are what they should look like.

Please don't hold me to this as it has been quite some time, but look at the perforated slits in the photo of the known original - see the little tabs in the center of each? This is what I remember original boxes as having and have seen a number of known present day put-togethers that do not. By no means am I suggesting that this is definitive, but is perhaps worth looking into.

As for theOP's disappointed feelings, I can only go on my own experiences with Ian, but I highly doubt that if the packaging is unoriginal, he is knowingly or intentionally trying to pull a fast one, which is something that may be considered the norm with ebay.

On the other hand, and to take from another recent thread, as long as his opinion is that of genuine, there should be no questioning or disappointment, right? ;) j/k

And have you gone onto the site and used the ask GC about the item for sale? Let them know you have concerns.

Probably in most cases "Great Collections" has impressed collectors far and wide because of his fast results. I would say however there are significant lapses and issues that would get someone in trouble if raised on a public forum. Teletrade would still be in existence were it not for the competition of GC, that is just one of the points that could be raised.

I personally buy from GO almost every week. They are about my favorite place to score great deals. They have always been professional and ship items extremely fast. I buy on Sunday and receive on wednesday. I can't see them knowingly sell counterfeit items, but maybe the items in that category are handled by someone who isn't as knowledgeable in original packaging. I would just shoot him an email through GC. He will personally reply back fairly quickly in my experience.

Yes, but with the exuberant buyers who are overjoyed about their purchases there are no doubt seller/consignors that are less than sanguine....That is the dirty little secret in this business, people do not get full value, do not sell in the right way especially in the case of bullion items and type gold where picking up the phone or emailing the top buyers like HA, Rarcoa or Stacks/Bowers, Dale Larson, would not have to pay or have deducted auction fees, which are 15% under $1000 (buyer + seller) and 10% over $1000. There is no harm to picking up the phone and calling around and getting offers except with extremely intimidating buyers.

I disagree, Owle. Unless you're selling a lot (and $10k wasn't considered a lot) of bullion, Heritage has just offered to buy items in the past when I tried dealing with them. They said they wouldn't list the items in auction, and if I sent them my bullion, they'd just send me a check. That being the case, I didn't feel comfortable dealing with them (at least for bullion).

It all depends on what you are trying to sell. If you have certified Saints or other mid-mintstate type gold you are better off with a straight sale to leading buyers rather than running the coins through an auction company. If you have super rare certified coins, Heritage may be the way to go, but expect a long wait for payment. At least with GC your wait is less.

    AWORDCREATED Hardly Noticeable

From the 'my sets link' -----> "Mixed date coins were sealed in boxes without any indication of the date of the coin enclosed. "

Which would indicate this is one of the special dates? And if these were over boxed with a large purchase they might not be individually labeled and may have never seen the light of day to yellow?

So a consigner sends Ian coins and because they are on Ebay he should not auction them? Unopened GSA's trade hands, why would he not auction them?

I see nothing wrong with the boxes and have opened a couple of these in the past. These are not individually shipped dated GSA's these are from the later mixed lots.

You are right there are not 100's of these unopened, there are 1000's.

I think an apology to GC is in order for your statements that attempt to make them look bad with no facts to back them up. Ian runs a great operation, if he thought there was any foolery going on, they would not be on his site. He is a very respected individual in the industry and would not risk that on any type of questionable auction.

Everybody needs to gripe sometimes, but when you do everyone else demands apologies. Fun times on CT. Woot!

Thanks for everyone posts and opinions. I have no doubt that these are original boxes that are sealed (never before opened). Yes, they are in pristine condition, mainly because the boxes have never seen the light of day. They were purchased in quantity originally and were in larger shipping boxes.

Over the past few years, I have handled similar GSA coins from a variety of sources - some were even open with the pristine boxes. One group we had about a year ago was from a dealer who set them aside in the late 1980s and was cleaning out his storeroom. Another was an estate.

I dont need to apologize for anything. I have a right to be skeptic, I have a right to open a discussion about my concerns. Go cry for apologies some where else.

So they are completely differnt boxes then the dated and labeled boxes? And were they originaly sent out at a later date?

They were sold in quantity, still at the time (in the 1970s) and still packaged/sealed by the GSA. But they were sent out after the individuals.

Are you still disappointed that we auction them? I got the impression from your post and title that you are disappointed because you suspect the coins were in new boxes, sealed fraudulently after the fact. Note: if they were not sealed by the government or sealed/resealed, we would not accept them... you are right about that.

My initial thought was that they dont look right and could be staged. My initial reaction was disappointment, because I bid and buy from your auction house, because of your service and selection. However the main reason I use you guys, is because I think of you as straight shooters. I hate that some of the other coin auctions I attend(local or through proxibid), I always have to be on guard so to speak. I wanted to start a discussion about Unopened GSA Morgan to better understand.

If you say they are original I will take your word on it. Thanks
