I guess that is the $4750.00 question. The PR 65 CAMEO and the PR 66 were, I believe, consecutive strikes. Why one 65 & one 66. Why one cameo and one not. Different graders same day? Same grader, short memory?
Can I borrow your hair splitter? I know what you are saying, and I've seen some that could have gone either way, but I think in this case... it's a cameo. Note that if it's "a matter of degree" then that leaves a whole subjective, undefined area of incorrectness wide open. I know what cameo means, what it looks like, etc., and I think it's reasonable to expect the grading companies do too. Now, I understand that a grader might feel that a particular cameo is "deep" (again, subjective) and give it that designation (we could argue all day as to the exact point where it becomes "deep") but to leave off the cameo designation on a coin that is a cameo is ridiculous IMHO. If you're so inclined, call it a "shallow cameo"
I have to give it to airedale, these two coins are perfect example. Both of these coins, the PF66 and the PF65 CAM are very, very close to each other in the amount of frost they have on the devices. I even thought for a minute that they might both be the same exact coin, but after closer inspection I changed my mind on that. Anyway, in my opinion (stress opinion), NGC did make a mistake. But I think the mistake they made was to assign the Cameo designation to the PF65. I think both coins just miss. And that's why samj is correct, it is hair splitting. But that's what the cameo designation is. Deciding what is cameo and what isn't is subjective, but there is also an objective side to it. For a coin to be designated as cameo it is supposed to have frost on all of the devices, without major breaks or lack of frost. Neither of these coins have that, there are areas on both where the frost is missing. There are other areas where the frost is weak but it is there. But it is the missing areas that decide it, and that is the objective part. However in this case, the NGC graders used their subjective opinions and did assign the cameo to the one coin. I can't really put it into words any better than that. Cameo is one of those things that you just have to see to understand it. It requires looking at lots and lots of examples, and after a while you know it when you see it.
This is a great thred to illustrate how TPG's use designations, and grading systems to convince investors that their own opinions are worthless. Have fun, folks!
Here are some photos---not as nice as yours but it fits my collection just right! I've taken them from different sides and light--the one photo makes it look like there might be some haze or lots of marks on the coin but that is all on the holder--the coin is really nice and spotless. I'm down to the 1951 and 1952---I'm going to replace my 1953/1956/1958/1960 and then I'm going to call it complete (haha) unless I upgrade some to CAMEO. I've tried to take my time with this set (6 years) and passing up many coins that just miss my "mark"---I'm picky but I like this set. Speedy
Hi Phoenix, I like the cameos too. Id get a book and do some research on the matter. I do know that all proofs 71 and after are cameo, deep cameo, whatever you want to call it. The dies are now made that way to consistently strike coins with a cameo effect, while before 71 they were not. I think its funny how you see proof items listed after 1971 as cameo like its something uncommon.
I love proof coins. I like collecting them. It's a bit hard finding a nice proof coin these days with out some nasty toning on it for me. I bought a beatiful 1967 SMS quarter the other day for a dollar. I couldn't figure out why it was so cheap. Thaen I look at it closely and on the back there are some minor scratches on United. Oh well. Good deal for a dollar though. Might just sell it for a few bucks pointing out and explaining there are some minor scratches. Or might just keep it. Don't know yet. I don't recall anything honestly saying anything about proof coins after 1971 as cameo. The proof coin I have is 1961. But I don't know. I talk so much I don't remember much of what I've said in the past. lol. Unless it is important or serious or about someone I care about. I do remember things though other people say. lol. Thanks for the help everyone. Like GDJMSP said it takes getting used to and experience to tell the diffence between different cameos. Thanks again everyone.
