I've spent a good deal of time reading the forums, trying to get a handle on the dynamics.

As my name implies, I'm old! (Hey I wrote for Error Trends before Arnie Margolis bought it.)

Not that my collection is anything special, but I've been around long enough that I probably have some items that some newer collectors have never seen. Is it worthwhile to post these for discussion or not. Some have been cherry picked and others came through standard channels. FWIW here's an example:

Please let me know - I'm too old to offend, so please be honest.

That's an awesome error! It's a little tough for me to tell, but I am assuming that the post shows 2 different coins, each with a double strike, that have been found to have been struck one right before the other? (if that makes sense.) Or are all 3 struck coins stuck together?

Actually, it's 2 double struck coins and a "chain strike". They are 2 separate coins.

I've always wondered if a set this nice didn't have some "help".

I would have to say you are right about these coins having a little help from a mint worker

That's really cool. I only have 1 example of something like that...2 tokens, one that was double struck, and one with an indent. It took me a few weeks to realize that the double struck portion of the token perfectly fit the indent. Really cool stuff.

Why would you think that this type of error had some help from a Mint employee? Heck, if the employee got caught doing it, that would be the end of their employment. In today's economy, that would be like playing Russian Roulette with an automatic.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

Do you think that mint employees never do anything illegal at the mint ? If I worked there I bet I could make some doozeys .

The recent FUN auction had a Washington quarter struck on a circulated gaming token!

Yes, I think assisted errors do exist.

Please post more and let's discuss. I want to learn as much as I can, and I've found that you can learn the secrets of life from the older generations. Awesome coins by the way!

This is mated pair consisting of two chain-struck cents. There's no reason to think these had any help as chain strikes are pretty common (although finding both members of the pair is decidely uncommon).

    Mike,

I've got to disagree with you here, especially when you say "no reason".

When I see a pair of coins as perfectly positioned as these and they have stayed together, I think it is a real possibility that there might have been late night help. There also the possibility that sheer randomness accounted for this set - I've seen stranger and nicer.

The coins are perfectly postioned because that is what a chain strike produces 100% of the time. It cannot be any other way. The apposed edges of the two planchets or coins flow together during the strike, producing perfect alignment between contiguous portions of the design. Mated pairs are usually retreived from mint-sewn bags or by employees of coin-wrapping services.

    Nice error.

Makes me wonder how many of these can one person come across? I'm starting to wonder how many of these errors occur as a direct result of someone's connections? Who ends up with a good chunk of them? How do they end up submitted in such large consecutive number lots, most likely by one source?

I suspect some internal help and ambition. Many people end up in good jobs as a result of connections. You do get those who do not appreciate how hard it might be to get a job at a mint. For them it was easy. So is their playtime at work.
