I wonder if there will be coins minted for presidential mistresses also, you know, JFK and Marylin Monroe, Clinton and Lewinski and so forth. That would be really interesting!!!
There are many, many ways to protect coins and some are just as good if not better than the slabs TPG's use. You can also purchase the same holders that some of the TPG's use and put them in yourself for much less. It's bad enough that many collectors pay premiums and have become so dependant on TPG's for grading but to pay them to simply put your coins in a slab for protection when you can do it yourself!!??
You can do that and even put them in better cases, but that would deny the value of the profesional grade of the coin. The hobby wants and needs as many disinterested grading mechanisms as possible. Randy
I agree in part. For investment pieces and for verification/authentication it sometimes becomes necessary and wise to submit coins to a professional TPG. IMHO, it is not good to suggest to a new collector to send common, circulating coins to a TPG and pay the slabbing fees on a coin that will probably not be worth much over face. If you figure, cost per coin + s/h + Slabbing fees you would probably end up spending about 10x or more what each coin is actually worth. If protection is the main concern then this money would be much better spent on proof or uncirculated sets that offer protection straight from the mint. You then get the whole years run of coins for not much more than 1 coin would cost to submit to a TPG.
Old Silver I never said to send in any coins to be graded, if you read my first post again I said buy directly from the mint [as you suggest] or buy coins already graded from the secondary market. I never said to submit coins. Anyway for my collection I will be buying the mint set of coins which will includes these coins and add them that way, I don't see much else to do with this set. My main focus is on other modern series right now.
Probably collect my presidential coins in the mint and proof silver sets along with the state quarters. The clad proof sets that ND mentioned above would be nice is they are released early . Probably be the only one in my county that has them. It surprises me how very few people even know they are to be released. The few i know that do know about them are curious about how much they are going to cost and where do you get them. Think maybe i better check to see if either one of our banks will get them. my guess it no.
I like to time my purchases so I can buy as many as possible at once (to lessen postage costs). The way the mint releases and then cuts off products it is hard to do that, and this has caused me to miss buying some products that I really wanted. I wish that the mint would go back to covering postage like they used to, or release mint, clad and silver sets at the same time.
