I accidentally put the wrong coin in an airtite holder and I cant get it open to switch coins. Anyone have any tips on how to open it? I don't really have very long finger nails and its hard to pry it open.

If you open it it will never have as tight of a seal again. To open it wedge a razor-blade in the seam and twist a little then you should be able to get a fingernail in there...

Hmmmm....is it worth it to open it then? The coin I put in it is too small for the holder, so it rattles around it. I was afraid it would scratch up the coin it rattles around too much. Its not a particularly valuable coin though (1914 barber dime in F12).

box cutter, razor blade. put it in the crease and put some pressure on there and twist until it starts to open, then slide the blade around the rest.

Be careful though, those things are sharp!

Honestly, if you don't care about the air-tite, considering they are 50 cents a piece, put it sideways in a vice and close it slowly, the one piece with separate and you can open it, but the air-tite won't be the same. It worked for me.

That also, don't need to hear you had to get stitches because the blade slipped.

They still seal but not quite as tight. I would switch out the coin but don't use the used airtite for anything that special either. They are mostly to protect the coin from damage, not to actually be truly airtite, so it will be ok to re-use...

Also, you don't have to apply much pressure to get the razor in the seam so I don't think there is risk of hospitalization.

  9. I answered this a few times here before. Use a hair dryer on it for a few seconds. Repeat as necessary. Not kidding it works. TC

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I don't own either a box cutter or hair dryer so Ill have to pick one of this weekend.

You have a steak knife or kitchen knife don't you ? They work perfectly, and are easier to control.

I have found thumb tacks to be very effective. I always keep one around.

I never have trouble opening an airtite. What I DO have problems with sometimes is getting the coin out of the one side since there is usually nothing to get a hold of without prying or scratching the coin.

Use the ring type and that problem disappears.
