    Hi guys,

Recent ebay pickup. Haven't gotten it in-hand yet but it looks pretty good from the photos. Nice color, minimal wear, a few nicks on the obverse, and a small spot on the reverse that should be treatable with verdi-care. I think this one is at least a high XF. What do you guys think?

    Thanks,

    Simon

    I'm thinking 40. Nice coin!

    Thanks Jody.
Comparing to photograde and other slabbed examples, my thought would be a little bit higher than 40. The reverse is strongly defined, the beads in the hair are all present and strong, and the lines of the hair on top are all just about separated. A quick search reveals this PCGS XF45. I know pictures don't always show the full story, but from what I see, that slabbed example looks like it has a little more wear and contact marks than this coin.

What do you think happened to the "LI"? PMD or?

Xf 40-45 depending on the day nice clean coin but too much wear on the high spots for an au grade

Thanks guys. This may be one I send in at a future date for grading. I like the color and will post pictures when I get it in-hand.

Yeah I'm not a good grader but the LI is unsightly. Good luck with it.

If it's not AU then it didn't miss by much.
If it's a slightly soft strike then I could go with AU.

Well worth sending in should grade clean not sure if the li is wear or weak strike why I can't call between 40-45 in hand I could make a better evaluation but I'm also not a tpg just a coin collector

When I posted this coin elsewhere, someone mentioned the possibility of the coin being dipped in brass a while ago (like 30+) years and has since retuned, giving it the appearance of luster in the photos. I'll check for scratches when it arrives but I'm not sure. What do you think? Does it resemble an old cleaning to you? (Personally I think no, as there is usually some weird discoloration around the stars or around parts of the design on the outer portions of the coin, which I don't see.)

Ok dumb question... but I do not see an LI anywhere on the coin. Is it just me or is this 1 AM being up affecting me?

It's either some wear, a weak strike or a combination of both. When I was looking at other 1845 Large Cents on ebay, I saw that a number of them had a similar weakness.

It does look more like strike than wear to me. very nice coin BTW! The rest of the strike looks very good, so what would cause this, grease?

To be honest I'm not quite sure. Could be a few things. I will probably have a better guess once I get the coin in-hand.

If you look at the reverse the upper left part of the wreath under sta in states sppears weakly struck too it does not appear to be a very well struck coin
