Can someone please post a list of the key dates of all the denomination of coins. I have trouble ever knowing if I do or do not have key dates and a list... maybe even a spread sheet would be nice. I have the rest of the night free of homework so ill spend it looking through my collection for key dates. I have mostly, Modern Copper Pennies, Wheat Pennies, Nickels before 1979, Dimes before 1979, and don't bother with the quarters because I only have 1979-1964, and most kennedy half dollar dates... I also have some ike dollars and little dollars. I was thinking and I have a 1973 ike dollar and I remember someone here said that that was the rarest date or something. I don't really know, my head hurts after 2 hours of geometry homework -Jason
The suggestion every time someone asks this question is to buy yourself a Red Book (used is fine) and use that to determine what the key dates are. There are too many to list, really, and some people debate what constitutes a key date or not. If you don't want to buy a Red Book, I might suggest looking through the Numismedia web site and noting which coins sell at significantly higher prices than the rest of the coins in their series. It's online and free.
oh I have a redbook... its around here somewhere lol yea the only reason I asked was because I couldn't find it... but thanks for the advice anyway I always appreciate your input
No problem. We don't like to often say "It's better if you do it," but in this case, you will be much better off doing some research on your own and then coming back with questions. It's not a "blow-off" answer. I'm sure people would love to discuss the topic with someone who says, "Hey, so here is my list, do you agree/disagree and why?"
Just do a google search of mintages for whatever series you want to know. It would be way too time consuming to list every key date for every series.
Mintages don't always dictate key dates. An example that springs to mind is the Roosevelt Dime series. The 1955 coins are the lowest mintage, but the 1949-S is the key date. I suggest as was said earlier to check a RedBook and see which is most expensive in a given grade. That's the key, and it may vary within series from grade to grade.
