    hi everyone,

i have tips how to start a coins collection here. hopefully you will be enjoy and gain some information from me...thank you!

SEVEN TIPS TO START A COINS COLLECTION
Identify yourself: Start your coins collection with one or two meaningful numismatics series related to your own area of interest.

Complete: Try to collect al the coins in ones series, in other words, complete a series in order to increase its potential numismatic value.

Authenticity: Coins that are issued by an issuing authority of a country, commemorating an event in that country, and endorsed by a national or an international institution, have a high degree of authenticity. Therefore, these commemorative coins make for highly numismatic collections.

Rarity and Limited Mintage: The lower the mintage the higher the chances that the coin value will increase. It is likely that demand is higher than supply, as a result of which the coin series becomes rare and hence, more valuable.

Policy and Image: The more conservative, strict and stringent the issuing policy of the issuing authority the higher the potential value of coin.

Age and Condition: The older, and hence rarer the coin that is also in good condition, will always have a higher collectible value and price.

Patience: Collecting coins is similar to investing in other kinds of collectible items. It requires great patience. Some coins are immediately appreciable, while some others will appreciate after many years.

    Some additional comments:
    - Policy & Image: Though some issuing bodies may be more "stringent" with their issuance policies, that alone does not make the coin/medal any more valuable. The three major factors determining the value of a coin are CONDITION, MINTMARK, and YEAR, with the condition being the number one factor in most cases.

    - Authenticity: Any coin that is issued is authentic - to it's issuing body. Plus, not all numismatic items need be issued by an international country or institution. For example, some Civil War tokens were issued privately, and not by a country or national institution, but they are nonetheless popular numismatic items.

    - Age - Just because a coin is older does not automatically make it more valuable. An 1899 Indian Cent will almost always be less expensive to purchase in a set than a 1922 plain Lincoln cent in the same condition. The age of a coin is not the only factor to consider when determining the value of a coin. The specific year, mintmark, and condition are the three most important factors.

Collecting in general shouldn't only be about the value of the coins in the future - those that are only worried about that are called investors, and not collectors. Collectors should also take into consideration whether or not they will enjoy collecting certain series of coins - for example, I don't really care to start or complete a set of US Large Cents, because I don't really like the design, but I am very anxious to complete a set of Lincoln cents, because for me, completing that set is something I enjoy.

Zuhairy's comments are a good start-off point for those considering in investing in coins, but I would hope those interested in investing also have some small interest in collecting, and will take the comments of others on this forum to heart!

I boil all down to only 1 point.

    1. If you like what you collect, then you will be happy collecting.
