From Wikipedia (Button): "Buttons made from seashell were used in the Indus Valley Civilization for ornamental purposes by 2000 BCE.[6] Some buttons were carved into geometric shapes and had holes pierced into them so that they could be attached to clothing with thread.[6] Ian McNeil (1990) holds that: "The button, in fact, was originally used more as an ornament than as a fastening, the earliest known being found at Mohenjo-daro in the Indus Valley. It is made of a curved shell and about 5000 years old."[7] "The earliest functional buttons were found in the tombs of conquering Hungarian tribes from the late 9th century.[8] Functional buttons with buttonholes for fastening or closing clothes appeared first in Germany in the 13th century.[9] They soon became widespread with the rise of snug-fitting garments in 13th- and 14th-century Europe." It is quite possible that the 3 hole coin was a decoration but it may have been nailed to a coffin/memorial rather than sewn to cloth.
I thought scarabs were designed to be wrapped inside of mummies. They were carved in the form of beetles to ensure the dead would be clean. I could be wrong of course, its not my primary study.
I dug up this thread because I had this to note, we may be taking over the world, but there's still a stronghold in North America/coin shows. Any remedies? Also, this thread was so funny and insightful that I just had to restart it. Cheers!
I think I figured out why we have so much fun. Its because we are still kind of amazed we are actually able to own these wonderful pieces of history. I mean, every time I open up a box of ancients I have, I kind of sit back and think, "wow, these are so COOL!" That cannot help but put you in a good mood, well that and Steve's incurable hyperactiveness.
The more I participate in this site, the more I can appreciate how it is moderated. I have almost completely departed from another coin forum, because of the all censorship and posts being deleted or locked without notice - all under the guise of a being a "family site"... ugh... I think the moderators here have a fantastic hands-off approach to folks who post here, most of whom generally are just acting like normal adults....
Can't believe I hadn't notice this thread before - I completly agree with Green, you guys are great and show off a ton of amazing coins. They got me interested in ancients, though I haven't been getting any coins lately.
Sometimes I post on Forum, but more often than not one member is rude and blunt and puts me off (always the same member!!), so I come here often. Coin community is a coin concentration camp, leave that well alone IMO. Cointalk...........is relaxed, Steve X, ummmmm, what can I say. ADHD.
Just come to the World Money Fair in February. The world's biggest coin show, but what CoinTalkers find interesting is of course determined by their location. Besides, the WMF is not exactly focused on ancients either ... Christian
