Ended up not spending much time at FUN this year, as both my wife and I have really nasty colds. Didn't stay overnight, and just did a tour of the tables for a couple of hours (sorry I didn't get a chance to meet any of y'all, but really feeling poorly). However, I did raid the Morgan tables of these two nice NGC coins. Hopefully next year, I will stay longer and get a chance to meet and greet some of you folks.
Two sweet Morgans , you did good . Is there something going on with Miss Liberties lip on the '80-CC ? Like a VAM . Or is it the pic ?
Those are the tips of the olive leaves from an old clash. You can also see the tip of a leaf on the bridge of her nose and in the "Cap Vee". The dies clashed at least twice as evidenced by the two diagonal clashes on her neck which represent the leading edge of the right wing (viewer's left). You can also see a "dash" below the second "8" of the date. When the transition was made from 1879 to 1880, it was necessary for the Mint worker to (lightly) place a dash on the working hub over the 10th denticle to the right of the "neck vee" as a visual aid to align the date in its proper position. Most of the time, the dash was polished away before putting the hub into service making the working dies, but sometimes it was overlooked. The most notable of the "Dashed 8" VAM's is the 1885-CC VAM-4 Doubled Dash. Chris
