I have 1802 (AN XI ) A Mint Mark France 5 Franc coin that I am trying to determine if it is real or not? What does the edge look like specifically? If any one has a pic it would greatly help. Also are there any known fakes of this coin?
Edge should read "DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE". There are fakes of everything out there. Try posting a picture.
Here is a link to the auction where it sold. I will try to get some pics of the rim tomorrow. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390732443592&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
I have the same year, though I believe from a different mint. Your coin has excellent detail. I can't say what the value is. What I would do is carefully weigh and measure the coin as soon as it is received. It should look and feel like silver and weigh about 25 grams, taking into account that it has lost weight due to wear. Perhaps others can provide a more definitive answer.
Your coin seems to have a different design from this one, but I can't say exactly what that means: http://www.ebay.com/itm/France-An-X...er-Consul-5-Francs-Silver-Crown-/221337631295 There is also a different signature on the obverse. I am looking to see if I can find your type.
"A" apparently means Paris. Your coin differs from this one, though: http://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=15857 Again, I have yet to see your coin type in my searches. The rooster is normally at about 8 o'clock on the reverse. Still, I am not qualified to determine whether or not it is authentic.
Your coin also does not match with this one: http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/world-coin-prices.aspx?category=124903&worldcoinid=319096 Personally, I'm now skeptical of your coin.
Upon further digging, I believe what you have is a medal by this artist, who made a series on Napoleon: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romain-Vincent_Jeuffroy
There is no 5 francs with that design. The item is listed as no returns, so about your only option is to contact ebay at this point.
Yeah, I'd consider opening up a case with eBay and contacting the seller. Though I list my items with "no returns," I am generally very flexible in order to maintain my 100% rating.
