Are NGC slabs ugly?

I prefer an accurately graded coin, and it doesn't matter who slabbed it.

However, in all fairness, the NGC Edge View holder is the one currently used and not the old all-white slab you've shown.

Question: Does your preference for the PCGS slabs include the old rattlers that are too small for the PCGS storage box?

I never pay much attention to the slab when buying a coin , the coin and only the coin should matter , then the price in that order . Though going on looks themselves , if I had to pick a slab I'd pick the old small ANACS slabs . What I really hate about both their slabs are those corny specialized tops like 1st Eagle on Venus or This is the 1st of 1o,000 minted coins . Just put the type of coin and the grade and NGC or PCGS .

 

The old look is the most common. Google image "NGC slab" and you will see. Secondly, the changes are not drastic, even if they now have a space to view the edge. It still has the majority of the slab filled in white.

I do prefer PCGS slabs over NGC, but allow me to make a distinction... I am not a huge fan of PCGS slabs either. Many folks here are assuming I'm in love PCGS slabs (not saying you are quoted poster). I only said they are better looking (in my opinion). As for the boxes, I don't have one. I don't have enough slabbed coins to warrant purchasing one (yet).

 

If I had to shoose a slab for looks, I think NGC looks a lot better than PCGS. However, NGC slabs are a lot tougher to crack open than PCGS, so that part I don't like.

 

Im an NGC edge-view lover as well. Dont care for the PCGS plastic.

I also agree with the poster who liked the old white ANACS holders. Those are some of my favorites as well.

 

I prefer the edge view NGC then the pcgs their both ok I wish they would stack with each other on the same note I hate the anacs slabs I think their plain awful I will buy a good coin in one tho to either be cracked out and resubmitted to NGC or pcgs or left raw I just think anacs slabs are cheesy and they won't stack

 

I guess I prefer PCGS, though like many have said or eluded to... I really don't care too much - I am fixated on the coin, not the 'frame'.

 

The newer ANACS and going back to the blue ones as well, are by far my least favorite slabs of the main 3, but the white ones were good. I like they were small and not much wider than a 2X2. I just stack them in old hard plastic 2X2 cardboard boxes. Like the white ones those Harris 2x2s come in, works perfect

 

NGC slabs have a nice, quality, durable, and professional look to them. They are simple, the front and back of the slabs are just one smooth piece of plastic. PCGS has all sorts of ridges sticking up. And the corners. Why is there just a little bit of plastic raised up a little more on the corners? Was it too hard to raise that ridge up like that all the way around the slab?
PCGS slabs look like something I could have made in 6th grade shop class...and probably would have gotten an F on.
PCGS slabs are garbage, that is fact.

 

What I really hate about the anacs slabs is that tapered top makes em impossible to stack and can make them hard to grab ahold of especially with my damaged arthritic and carpal tunnel affected hands

Hopefully you don't mean that you like to handle 100+ year old proof coins?

 

Just because that's the one that shows up in a Google search doesn't mean it's the most common.
I sure see a lot more of the new edge view holders on eBay than I do the older stlye, which also does not mean they are the most common, but I'm just trying to make a point.

 

I'm a little surprised that so many people actually like the NGC slab. Not that it's an overwhelming majority (poll = 7 to 11, currently). Then again maybe I shouldn't be so surprised since all in favor own coins in NGC slabs.

 

Just checked eBay and it's about even. Maybe slight advantage in numbers to the new slab. However, the majority of sellers on eBay are selling for a living. They are constantly churning profit by taking raw coins and slabbing them for a higher price. So it's only logical that you will find more of the newer style. Even still it is a mind blowing difference.

Another thing... the new slab is, well, new. The old slab was used for years. That alone should stand to reason that there are more old slabbed coins in existence.

 

Doesn't matter to me, eventually the coin will go into a proper holder or in an album. I do prefer to buy old PCGS slabs because their grading standards on old proof coins was much more consistent in my opinion. both NGC and PCGS are all over the place on proof coins these days, I have PR-63s that look nicer than some of the PR-66s that I have.

 

If you think a brand of slab is ugly or garbage, don't buy it.
I don't see the need to be that short sited.
I'm just looking at the coin and if I feel it's correctly graded.
I'll worry about the brand of the slab when the day comes to sell.

Yea. I'm of the belief that grading is all a sham. The only reason I have contemplated grading a coin lately is cause the market recognizes it with higher value and the coins I would grade are to be sold quick at a marked up price. I wonder if it will be this way in the future though. You would think people will wake up and realize grading is too subjective to make it worth doing, but then again a lot of people are pretty dumb. I'm willing to bet nothing changes as long as TPG's come out with "new" ideas. Like PCGS with the anti-counterfeit hologram. The public (at large) will continue to fall for it too.
