Can anyone ID this?? Bronze coin of Carausius rev she wolf suckling twins ROMA MILI--- is this ROMA MILITUM???? Cannot find it...
Interesting, found this but yours has a different legend... http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-3166
If no one comes with something, you may have an unlisted coin. Regardless, you should contact Dane so she can include it on Wildwinds and her Carausius spreadsheet on Helvetica"s.
Dane's a she? Rats. I just submitted some coins to Wildwinds and called her Mr. Kurth. I hope she has a sense of humor.
Very much a she, and I do think she has a sense of humor. It's been a while since last we spoke, but she seems to be a very nice person.
My fake radar is slightly going off. There's something odd about that piece - not any one thing maybe, but a combination of very small incongruities. I'd need to see better pics, and the dimensions.
Found metal detecting apparently. Near where I live. What makes you think its possibly fake John? I do see what could be a very large die crack on obv.
I don't think it's fake per se. All I'm saying is I'd like better pics and the dimensions. There's something odd about the lettering that I can't put my finger on, but perhaps that could be attributed to differences between the British and mainstream Roman styles? Most of Carausius looks quasi-barbarous anyway...
I've asked him. The lettering seems ok to me, looks typical. Pictures are crap though, I'll grant you that.
What do you reckon its worth if genuine and if a completely unknown rev legend ?? My guess is thousands.
It's possible, but as you know, rarities don't necessarily make for valuable coins. However, with Romans being as popular as they are, there's a good chance somebody would pay well for a unique specimen. It could, however, be listed in another source. RIC is not exhaustive. I would post it at FORVM.
Forum would love that! its for sale on ebay...................what would JS say, he'd have a right royal whinge...as usual.
It may be worth a pretty penny, but thousands? I doubt that vey much. But then again, I'm one cheap guy and I would never spend that kind of money on this kind of coin.
Check out completed listings on ebay uk for Carausius. One sold for over £4000 a few weeks ago, just a bronze coin like this, i guess it was rare too...clasped hands.
I forgot about the eBay part. Well...the seller should really pull the listing and do some research first, if he doesn't want to get cherry-picked.
