One side dull = kept in a collector folder then popped out and spent?

I have a couple of state quarters that are dull on one side only. They came from the mint that way in the bags ordered from the mint.

    First, welcome to the neighborhood!

Are you referring to the $25 bags? Did you buy them direct from the US Mint, or did you buy them from a third party?

It depends on the state. Some, like Michigan, Louisiana, etc. are very dull on one side.

One possibility: it was dropped, sat on the ground (deep grass is an ideal environment for this) for a while and then was found and returned to circulation with one side weathered and the other relatively less-exposed. Ta-Daa!!!

I also have had the same condition on mint sewn bags of quarters. I believe some of the coins were simply resting against the cloth of the bag and the environment got to them.

I thought maybe one side of the planchet was not polished.

I agree with Jersey. They were probably poorly maintained, and humidity or dampness got to them.

neither side is polished for ordinary, circulation quality, strikes. That's proof territory...

Mine came in mint sewn bags and were never placed in a folder. They went directly into plastic tubes.
