Questions about the new "Presidential Dollar Coin" series? I've read the following: The mint is supposed to be releasing the 1st one Feb 15 07. 1st four in the series released throughout 07 are: George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison. Statue of Liberty is featured on the reverse side of the entire series Supposedly, edge stamping of date, mintmark, and the motto What I'd kinda like to know is Which Mints are going to turn these out? P, D, S, ??? Looking at the Mints schedule page February 15 United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set Has anyone seen what the proof set will look like? Hows it packaged, just like normal Proofs? Will they make a Silver Proof Version? February 15 George Washington $1 Coin Bags and Rolls Makes sense, wonder what they'll go for? February 20 Golden Dollar Bags and Rolls I'm guessing this is the 2007 Sacagawea... Welp thats all I know and my questions... Anyone have any additional data that I did not list? Any additional Questions???
There is a reason that they do not do edge lettering. It is tough to do with large production coins. I would like to read how they will pull it off. Also how will they display it in cases? Edge lettering has been a hassel for PCGS also because there is no way to display it in their holders. All of this on top of one of a huge number of coins that they are already offering. I will be impressed if they pull it off without major problems.
They're being released for circulation, should be able to buy rolls at the bank at face value. Yes/No?
I can't find a bank around here thaqt will even stock them... they mostly get dollar coins, halves, and twosies from buisness customers when they make the deposit, purge them into one, and wait until someone like me grabs them, so i can spend them again. I doubt I'll ever find a prez dollar unless they get rid of paper.
The new President dollars will have edge lettering. "E Pluribus Unum", "In God We Trust", and "2007" will appear on the edge. The one thing that will be dropped entirely is the word "Liberty". These will be the first US coins ever issued without Liberty. I was commission to design and mint a set of four Presidential medallions, based on what I would do if I was designing the coins. The medallions are being offered by an outfit that sells coins on TV. I did two different reverses - Eagle Head in Shield, and Statue of Liberty. Here is what they look like:
Amazing work Dcarr!!! Amazing!!!!! Do you design coins fulll time or is that a part time gig??? By looking at your work it would seem like a full time gig... BTW, I see you also did the 2006 IASAC medal.... I'm a member of that club...
Thanks ! Yes it seems that this designing thing is becoming more of a full time gig lately, and that is fine with me PS: For those who don't know about it, here is the IASAC design:
Ok, Daniel... I'm a HUGE fan of your work. Your proposals for many of the State Quarters have been outstanding and should have, in my opinion, been chosen instead of those that were. I assume these medallions are what you would have presented to the Mint as your proposals for the new dollar coins. Now, I'm going to critique these designs you presented for the PRZ Dollars ("PRZ" being my own designation; it sort of fits in with the "IKE", "SBA" and "SAC" designations... anyway, I digress). First of all, I like the obverse portraits. They're very bold and fill a lot of the field. I like that aspect, but I don't like the scalloping around the border. It just seems a little too frilly. Also, I'm not fond of the Star with the numerical designation. I like the lettering above the portraits; it's large and easily readable. I think the dates are a little small, but I don't know what else you could have done with them other than perhaps setting them in incuse at the presidents' neckline. But, I think that would have been a bit too distracting. Secondly, the Eagle reverse is just not my cup of tea. To me, it looks like the logo for an insurance company. Now, the Statue of Liberty reverse is another story. I like this one. The representation of liberty stands proud and strong. You included the statue's base in this design, which I also like. Please don't take my criticisms harshly. I think you're quite the design genius. Far be it for me to design anything nearly as good as these. But, I'm waiting to see what you have to offer in the future. If you offer us anything on par with your State Quarter designs, well, we're in for a treat! Oh, and the IASAC design is stunning!!
Daniel, big fan of your work as well. Really nice. But I do agree with the comments above. I don't like scalloping, the stars with the numbers, nor the eagle (just seem to miss the magestic aspect of the bird). I will say however that I like the triangular edging of the IASAC. That is fresh (can't recall seeing that before), and really stands out. Really great design with fore/background layers. Very nice dimensional look to that one. Note that I say this knowing that if *I* was asked to design a coin, it would look like complete garbage. It's easy to be critical of someone else's fine work.
In a couple of respects your wonderful designs simply don't comply with the legislation authorizing the coins. The requirement for a depiction of the Statue of Liberty on the reverse instead of the word "Liberty" somewhere on the coin eliminates your eagle reverse (which doesn't impress me nearly as much as the statue does, anyhow). Since "E Pluribus Unum" and the date are legislatively mandated to be on the edge, they don't belong on the reverse. Why are you giving the denomination as "S1" instead of "$1", or the words "One Dollar"? I really like the star with the sequence number idea.
Thanks for all the nice compliments ! I actually tend to agree with the comments above. Things don't always turn out as well as intended. Yes, these are basically my artistic interpretation of the fisrst four president dollars (what I would do if I was in charge of designing them). And now that they are done, there are some things that I would have done differently. The "scalloping" is actually bunting. Bunting is the red white and blue circular banners historically seen draped across political podiums, etc. These are politically-inspired designs, after all. And yes, I realize that they do not conform with the actual president dollar legislation as far as inscriptions go. I sculpted these well before the US Mint released any images, and before much was known about the coin's specifics. The "S1" is a way to infer "$1" without actually saying $1. These are privately-minted medallions, and it would not be legal to put "United States of America" and "$1" on them. Oh, and here is one more "president" dollar I did recently for fun:
Yeah I figured it was bunting. Like it draped on old houses (sometimes), don't like it around the edge of coins.
Mr. Carr. Where can you purchase those Prsidential Medallion? Those are really cool. I'm a fan of your work as well. I've designed my own medallions and had them minted as well.
denver and philly No one has answered part of the origional question. Are the business strikes going to be produced at more than one mint, philly and denver? i have seen the holders and they only have slot for one coin per design/president.
