Heritage Auctions is selling one of the famous Brasher Doubloons today. The company has an excellent article on the famous coin: Link (for now): http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1201&lotNo=5100 Or just type "Heritage Brasher Doubloon" into an internet search engine. "The stuff that dreams are made of".
Thanks for the link. I don't know why, I have never gotten excited about these pieces. I mean, a private token minted by a NYC jeweler? Why all of the fuss? To be fair, I never cared for 1804 silver dollars or 1913 liberty nickels either, considering them fantasy pieces. I guess I have always just been an old grumpy coin collector who likes to collect coins minted by the government and used by the people as legal tender. That is just me though. There is no doubting the Brasher doubloon has a long history associated with US collecting.
An interesting and informative article. Thank you for posting the link! I would place a bid myself, but it's a few million dollars over my budget...
An awesome write up, but I have one problem with it. The "New York style doubloon with punch on breast" variety is hooey, it doesn't matter where the punch is.
Sold for: $4,582,500.00 (includes BP) Bid Source: Live: Floor bidder And this: Make Offer: This item's Owner is proactively entertaining Offers.
I am very interested in the private coinage of the US, much more so than the official mint issues. Give me Hard Times and Civil War tokens and even flattened pennies and all sorts of exonumia any day, over yet another Morgan dollar (zzzz). I like that article immensely, and I'll probably be chewing on it all day.
Nah, don't buy it. You won't be happy with that piece. "A coin that brings ruin to all who possess it!" Christian
I posted this film "The Brasher Doubloon" to my "Coins in Movie" site in 2012. The coin used in the film "Who needs five million, just hand it over" Actually, the film is a pretty good example of the hard-boiled detective film common in the late 1940's.
