Does anyone have any thoughts on how this coin might be graded? Thanks for your help in advance. I am very much a novice and would love to learn more. I have another with pretty cool toning. kennedy half 005.jpg kennedy half 006.jpg

Hard the tell from the lighting in your image but i think is see were on the face so i would put it at EF or low AU making it worth melt value !!

Are you referring to the nick next to his eye or the whole face? Thanks

The entire coin has wear on both sides.

The nick next to the eye isn't as bad as that crater on the side of his head.

Really not worth the money it will cost you to submit it.

I think EF is the best it could do, but I'd say no better than VF.

It looks AU to me, but it still would not be worth what grading fees would cost you. It would probably need to be at least MS-66 to make it worth you while.

Grading coins is more of an art then anything else.

If it is your coin add one point, if you are trying to buy, subtract one point. Just kidding…..

A good place to start learning about grading is on this website which they have a free app for your apple devices: http://www.pcgs.com/Photograde/

Another suggestion when you get a basic understand of the differences of the series of your choice from the “Photograde” website, is to build a cheap grading set of all the different grades of coins from your preferred series. Just remember that a MS66 from PCGS will be different from a MS66 from NGC so I would recommend having the same company’s slabs in the grading set that you want to start your collection in.

A lot of it will be trial and error but don’t get discouraged, even the graders make mistakes all the time. We have sent coins into PCGS that came back AU58, not understand what they were calling wear, a simple crack out and resubmitting the coin on the next order only to have it come back MS64. We also have sent coins in that we thought would be AU53 – AU55 at best only because they were of a different die variety to have them come back MS63 and in one case came back MS65 (I’m still scratching my head over that one).

The last thing I would add, take your time in understand the difference and have fun….

    Respectfully
I disagree. Kennedy's are notorious for weak strikes that appear like wear. I see thousands of them a month. For example find a strong 1984. These 40% however were not really weakly struck but when I look at this one even with the limited picture it is NOT a VF, nor a EF. It is min AU and possibly MS61 or 2. How? The tail, hair, wings etc. This has not been circulated at all from what I can see.

All that being said, it is worth melt and not worth slabbing....

Even with the MS silver kennedy's, if you went to a dealer, they would only take it for melt or barely above melt.
