    Chris---

It's a well known fact that NGC is probably the toughest for step designation. They require the steps to be riser to riser with no breaks of any kind. Minor hits or nicks are usually allowed so long as they don't go all the way to the incuse of the step.

As for grading, I think it's a toss-up on any given day. I've seen Jeffs in both slabs that were "gift grades", i.e. two or more points higher between what I thought they graded and what they actually had on the insert and visa versa. You just don't know what grade you'll get til you get them back from either company.

It's also generally accepted that PCGS FS Jeffs fetch higher prices for comparable grades. It's only been about 7 months since NGC went to the 5FS and 6FS designations on the inserts, but I really think that the rolls will eventually switch with the series because of this. Just a matter of time.

    Thanks for your input, Spy...

Anyone else care to weigh in (even on Jeff grading in general)

    Thanks,
    Chris

Not much else to say really - NGC always was tougher on FS Jeffs. As Spy said - it has only been in this past year that NGC, under pressure from collectors, finally agreed to loosen their FS standard to also include 5 step examples. Prior to that - only full 6 step examples received the FS designation.

I was disappointed in their relenting to pressure. Full means full - not almost full ;)
