I've been watching for a good example of this Athena-facing Klazomenai issue and nabbed this one last month. I have several Klazomenai coins featuring a winged boar but didn't have this type. As a bonus, since it has a ram on the reverse it also fits with my Pink Floyd Animals collection Ionia, Klazomenai. Mid-late 4th century B.C. Æ18 mm, 4.35 g Obv: Bust of Athena facing slightly right, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet Rev: KLAΖOMEN/AIΩN in two lines above, ram walking right; in right field, trophy Ref: SNG Munich 484; SNG Copenhagen 86. The triple crested helmet reminds me of a jester's cap. Or something Mayan, especially with that necklace. Here's an interesting and brief article about facing portraits in CNG archives, scroll down below the coin attribution.
whoa...that's not a bargain bin coin there is it? the reverse is cool but that facing athena is AWESOME.
Wow => thar she blows!! TIF, apparently your new Ram-coin arrived => it's awesome!! (congrats) I have one too => baaaaaaahhhh, coin sister!!
TIF => once you've updated your "Animals" project, I'd like a heads-up so that I can revisit your cool thread (okay?) thanks Cheers
A very nice coin TIF, but unfortunately Steve blew it out of the water. Quit it Steve! Congrats on the Niners win BTW.
I also disagree with vlaha's statement (it was untrue and a bit unecessary) => I have always thought that we were allowed/encouraged to post our similar coin-examples whenever an opportunity presented itself? (NOTE => when I start a thread, I encourage/beg other collectors to post their coins, for I "love" seeing other people's coins whether they're slightly better or worse than the OP example ... a good example being AncientJoe's collection => who deosn't love seeing Joe's awesome coins whenever possible?) TIF, my coin-sister => I absolutely love your new coin and I especially love the fact that I can compare my coin against yours for similarities and differences ... yup, that's what makes our little group rock => the coin-comradery ...... I don't view CT as a place to compete ... it is more like a big group of buddies with the same hobby as mine (you dudes are the group of people that I feel comfortible enough to share my geeky hobby with ... lucky you, eh?) anyway ... again, I love when you folks decide to post your coins when it's my thread, so I've always tried to keep your threads going with the same strategy ... => Hey, I love all of your coins as if they were my own ..... so unless it is an actual SMACKDOWN, let's try not to make our hobby a competition (coin-on, comrades!) => thanks vlaha (yah, that was a great game!!)
Very nice coins! This type seems to be rare and hard to find. I did not see any at any price on VCoins or Ebay that are in as good of grade. Good find, TIF!
You're right Steve, I guess it wasn't necessary. However, I wasn't trying to criticize, I was more reflecting on the coins compared to each other. If you look at them separately they're both show stoppers, but next to each other you can see differences. For example, TIF's coin has the full necklace, but Steve's has that gold, red, and green patina. But I guess I shouldn't be criticizing... Because, come on, if I tried to buy an example of this type, I would be blown to the moon!
