I got my hands on this proof cent. The price was right $5.00. There is a blemish on the field to the right of Lincoln. In hand the blemish has a silver look to it. I have never seen a blemish that looked like this, and eventhough it will do for my collection I'm still wondering what this is or what may have caused it. If I had to guess I would say that something got on the coin and when removed left this blemished. Please give me your thoughts on what you see. The pictures make the blemish look dark, but like I said it appears silver in color. The seller told me it was toning but I don't think so. Thanks.
There are some types cleaners such as dish washing liquid as well as others, that will leave a silvery type sheen on Cents! It could be either toning or where some type of cleaner was used in an attempt to remove a darker toned spot or fingerprints. It is really hard to say which!
Walter' I have to agree with Frank on this one looks like some type on toning and $5.00 for a 1950 single proof is a very good price you are lucky. BRUCE "THE FRANK GROUP"
I agree the price was right and I can live with the toning or what ever it is. It does appear that something unnatural has affected the surface, but seeing as I'm not going to ever submit this coin for grading, I'm not to worried about it. I'm just glad to have it. Now I only need the nickel, quarter, and half to have a set. Those will be nice and cheap I'm sure, ha ha. Thanks for the help.
Walter, I have seen the silver color you are describing on the proof coins. Does it look the mercury?
Not quite like that. It looks as though someone cleaned or remove something that was there and that something left this behind as a result. I wish I could get the camera to show what I see. High magnification shows only metal reaction and not pitting or surface damage ouot side of discolor.
