Way too many children that I love to pick favorites. Most recent "favorites"? My avatar is a nice medival thai coin from the Lanna kingdom, about 1400. Its threee dimensional so hard to show well. Its from Cheing Sen. Another might be a Ostrogothic coin I picked up last month: NGC graded CHAU*. Its from after the fall of Rome, with the german "barbarians" in control, basically the very beginnings of the "dark ages" or if you are PC "early medieval" period.
T hats a beauty don't know why you'd not love it I'm hoping to get a 3 leaves to go with my 2,leaves sometime my dream coin is a 1794 tho
Its a gold tremissis of Theoderic. It copied a tremissis of Justin, so minted around 510ad. The Ostrogoths didn't dare strike gold in their own name, knowing the Byzantines were stronger, so minted imitations of the current Byzantine gold coins. Not my main specialty, but I like early dark age coinage as well. It is a pretty nice condition piece.
I received this little guy about two months ago. Diocletian Potin Tetadrachm of Alexandria. Year 9 = 293-294 AD. DIOKLETIANOC CEB, laureate & cuirassed bust right ENATOV, L to right, Elpis standing left, holding flower and raising hem of robe, A in ex Milne 5063
thank you. I am also interested in knowing more about your avatar Thai coin pic. do you have other pictures to show more detail of it ? how big is it ?
Love that color - very original looking coin. It may not have the flash or excitement of the other coins posted, but it does have character.
I don't have more pictures, but I do know the dimensions. They are: 19 mm wide, three mm thick. Look at a ruler, that's a pretty thick coin! Thank you, it's actually very good for the type, you generally see them a bit more like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tater-Roman...zsGt3%2Bnsa8RoFyrQHw0%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc You might want to know, this one was a bit high price wise.
thanks, I do love it. the BB-27 is a common variety.but I love it. I do want a 2 leaf to go with with it. yours is a beautiful coin.
I did like your ancient coin, but I was answering to Medoraman's coin and was questioning him about his "Thai" coin in his avatar.
Can't pick just one, but if I had to it's this one. Not my most expensive, but one I'll likely never sell.
Here is another pic of one: They all weigh around 4 baht, so 2 ounces, of fairly pure silver, (well over 90% purity on average). They were made for the independent Lanna, (northern Thai), kingdom from the 14th to 16th centuries. The two most common ones were Chieng Mai and Chieng Sen. Known mainly as chieng(city) money. Many believe these bent bar coins were the precursors to the "bullet money" of later thailand, (siam). They are about 1.5 inches long, and about 1 inch wide and tall.
thank you. i find this very interesting. I collect Thailand coins. mostly the elephant coins seen in hiddendragon's "elephants" thread.
Those are fairly available, like the Rama VI and Rama VII issues. The Rama V baht coin is actually the key date to modern thai coins. Its bust left insted of right. About 99% of all I have ever seen have been fakes, so like a 1916d dime I would never buy one uncertified. This chieng money is fairly scarce. I only own 8 of them, and have only seen two others for sale I didn't buy. If you ever have a question on thai coins or the best books covering them, please let me know.
