So, y'all mind if I make myself cozy and stay awhile? Now that we've got the authenticity of my boyfriend's mecury dimes all settled, I've decided to start collecting a bit myself (along with my daughter, of course) Who knew this was so fun? My daughter's collecting all foreign coins she can find regardless of value (she loves foreign money), the state quarters, and likely the walking liberties. For her it's all about how pretty the coin is, not about completing a set or having something valuable. She'd rather have a pretty 2006 canadian cent than a rugged looking 1943 copper wheat penny (not that I've found one of those!) I'm more of a completer. I'll collect things I think I can finish and I love to find things. I'm the type that takes pleasure in hunting down a bit of troublesome code in hundreds of lines of code. Nothing is as exciting as finding that misplaced comma! Well, I've found that sorting through coins and finding something interesting gives a similar thrill, so yeah...I'm hooked. I've started on pennies and jefferson nickels just because it gave me an excuse to buy rolls of change to search through and "kick start" my collection I bought five rolls of nickels and seven rolls of pennies. Out of the five rolls of nickels I found 4 pre 1961 nickels, with the oldest being a 1940. Amazing! That was definitely my thrilling find of the day, a 67 year old circulating coin! Out of the pennies I found a 1954D wheat penny (another fun find), three canadian cents (my daughter will be thrilled) and 8 other pre 1970 pennies, oldest being a 1959D I'm not sure where it'll go from here, but I'm having a great time so far
looks: After your previous posts, I am glad that you have decided that you want to stay. So, now we can really say: Welcome! Glad to have you.
Glad to have you on the forum! As for attractive foreign coins, you and your daughter might want to browse the following site: http://worldcoingallery.com/ Hours and hours of fun looking at contemporary world coinage, after which you might be interested in acquiring some!
Welcome to the forum! I'm glad that you decided to stay around! One set you might want to look at is Franklin Halves....they are pretty cheap in circulated grades maybe $5-$10 each....and a set is easy to complete...it was the first collection I ever completed and I still have that set! Speedy
Glad to have you aboard. I was hoping you would decide to stick around and get involved in the hobby. Use this board as a source of information, as there are many impressive, knowledgeable hobbyists on here.
You may want to take a look at the American Silver Eagles. They use the same Walking Liberty design and you shouldn't get priced out of any of those as you might with the Walking Liberties.
I'm like your daughter, I dont care much for sets, If it catches my eye and is 'pretty' or interesting...I'll buy it... welcome!
Hi LB I am another OOH I like that type of collector LOL great to have you both on board De Orc :thumb:
Even though I've been in some form of collecting since grade school in the 70's, I still feel like a newbie. That's why places like this are so nice. I have other hobbies I chase after for periods of time, but I always come back to the bright shinny world of coins. Hope you enjoy it as much as well! Rick L.
i'm glad your staying!:thumb: if i were you, i would try a box of cents and search that. there are 50 rolls, and they are $25 dollars each. also, buy the red book, and a 1909-1958 wheat cent album. if your wanting to buy coins, i would follow speedy's advise and buy some franklin half dollars. i can buy them in circulated and sometimes uncirculated condition for $5. check your phone book and look for coin shops. flea markets are also great too. also, if your really interested in this hobby, try to get involved in a coin club. i have heard you learn alot off them. rule #1 for a new collector is to buy the handbook of untited states coins. or, also know as the redbook. i bought mine @ walmart for $8.88. that is the cheapest place to find it. read it, buy some rolls and have a good time. i have been collecting for 3 years now and have really gone far. go to the bank and buy more rolls. if you want to try nickles, they are $100 a box. when you have the money, you can buy half dollar boxes. they are $500. you can get very lucky. have fun!:high5:
