Coins with abbreviations like "QUAR. DOL."

Do you like the older quarters, halves, and dollars that say "QUAR. DOL" or "HALF DOL."? I don't like them. They look unfinished and lazy. As was later proven, the whole words can be spelled out on the reverse of the coin. The abbreviated versions look like the designers took a shortcut. I would keep one of these if I got it at face value, but I don't see myself ever buying one of these coins. Am I the only one who doesn't like these otherwise classic coins?

Technology was a little different back then.

Maybe I'm not the biggest fan of quarters, but the abbreviation doesn't make me like them less...

I don't ever plan on having a complete collection. I collect what I like. However, I might change my mind on these. I hated the Franklin half until I held two well-circulated specimens in my hand, and now I love them.

I agree! I also don't like the fact that cars didn't have A/C in them back then.

Well, for the period the OP is talking about, riding on a horse or in a wagon. I can see that getting old pretty quickly.
Lack of modern medicine wouldn't have been any good either.

That being said, I like the older stuff. I like the 5C 10C 25C 50C reverses of the bust coinage even better.

It wasn't being lazy as to why the denominations were not spelled out there just was not enough room to do so. The design came first and when it was approved the required text was placed in such a way that it fit on the coin.

Morgan dollars and the quarters and halves since 1892 were designed such that the denomination could be spelled out completely.

don't forget Ed that as well, the die-engraving technology had to evolve before it was even possible to spell out the entire word

That is true, yet with all of the advances of die engraving technology why is it we have such ugly coins to put in our pockets?

I hate it when the designer substitutes a symbol for the written word.........

That $ is not necessarily an artistic choice. It has appeared on the reverse of the Presidential Dollar since 2007.

True, but when it was done I believe they also used a smaller typeface.

I believe it is also mandated in the authorizing legislation.
