red book says it is worth 8 bucks. though their prices are quite high for many coins, they tend to be more on the mark for obscure things like error coins. i'd say that is about right. maybe for the right buyer you could get 20 or 30 bucks but that is best case scenario.
It is worth more than $8 to the right person since it does have a date. ^.- I am unsure as to an approximate value, but it comes down to each individual person. That is a very nice off-centered piece though.
P.S. Value for off-centered coins has a few factors: 1) Condition of course 2) What percentage is off-centered 3) Does it have a date The more off-centered the coin is with a date showing, the more value it has to the right person.
FYI: I am answering for noob76. My latest Red Book is from 2012 and they are listed on page 407. Look under misstrikes and error pieces in the index.
I would say this is 75% off center. I have seen ones that are 20% in this date go for 25.00 on ebay. I would say you could get 25.00 to 35.00 at auction.
i doubt that one will fetch the 45 price the e-bay seller is asking. error coins are in general neat pieces, but some of them are a lot more common than we all think. this is one of those. if i had this piece and someone offered me 20 bucks, and i wanted to sell it, i probably would. i got a jefferson nickel offstrike pretty similar to this for 17 bucks and the red book listed it at 12. case in point: i bought a penny struck on a dime planchet at a recent show for about 350 bucks. i got it graded through the local coin shop. came back ms-65. the dealer who is a pretty knowledge guy, and guys a lot more about mintmarks and fake authentication (has a huge cabinet of fake 16-ds and 1909s vdbs hes amassed over the years) tells me "that thing is probably worth a thousand bucks." i was pretty excited, but when i got home and actually checked the ha.com result, the 350 i paid for it was more on the mark. that said, if i found this piece in change, i'd be keeping this forever. i've never found anything close to this in change.
thanks for all of the replies. if i were allowed to sell items on ebay, i am pretty sure that i could get at least $20.00 for the coin.
i bought it from a coin dealer that i buy from and sell coins to quite often. he listed it as 70 percent off center. the price i paid was $5.00
$5 is a great price. That coin can sell comfortably between $15 and $18. If it were a post-2003 dime, it could go for way more.
