1974 Kennedy half dollar doubled die? shifting?

    Is there a way to tell the difference between doubled die and shifting?

    Yes, the main noticeable difference between a doubled die and MD (machine or mechanical doubling) is that a true doubled die will show rounded doubling that "adds" to the devices, as in it makes them appear larger.

    A coin with mechanical doubling will often have flat and shelf-like doubling, which can be seen in your photo, and "takes away" from the devices, meaning that if you ignored the doubling, the letters would appear smaller than normal. Hope this helps. :)

    Thanks that makes sense in what I am seeing. Is there any value in md verses dd?

    MD generally does not command a strong premium unless if it is extreme. With smaller examples of MD like you have, I like to keep a few as educational pieces so when I come across another coin and am unsure of if it is mechanical doubling or a doubled die, I can refer back to my own example of MD to compare. :)
