Okay, so I am doing my best to keep calm, because a few things have to happen before I can be really throw myself into a celebration for this coin...(the seller has to ship this exact coin, the USPS can't steal it, the coin has to be real, etc.) BUT I am super excited about this cherry pick. The pictures were good enough (although it looks like the seller shot them from an angle, because they're a little out of round - but the coin doesn't look damaged) and the variety is strong enough that I'm extremely confident this is "the big one." I won't be able to post my photos until it arrives, probably late next week (assuming this is the coin I actually get) but it might be fun to guess the grade based on the seller's pics above, then on mine, then on PCGS (assuming it's real and it arrives.) Holy moly!
As far as grade... I am really working on my grading for Washingtons, but I don't detect wear... A prime MS-65?
See, that's the thing...from the seller's photos, I can't tell if those dark areas are wear, toning, or shadows. I don't see a lot of marks... If it's a high AU, I did really, really well. If it's MS...who knows. I'm hoping that some more experienced collectors will chime in with opinions...and I'll do my best to take really good photos once it arrives.
I think I would have waited until I had it in hand before saying anything. Your post could serve to alert someone and create a touchy situation. Stranger things have happened. You also would have eliminated a few of your concerns about it. I don't mean to be critical, but I'm extremely cautious about saying too much about anything I buy, so that's just me talking. I sincerely wish you the best of luck with it and hope it grades and fulfills your expectation. It's nice to see some of our regular members make a nice score. Congratulations.
Thanks - I did hold off until the item was already won and paid for, and I can totally see what you're saying. Let's just hope that everyone behaves as they should.
I was wondering if that was wear, but I lean more toward a weak strike cuz other points don't match up (such as the pony-tail ribbon, forehead and parts of the eagle) is why I went with MS. I wish you the best of luck and really hope your wish comes out nicely. Good luck, mate.
FYI, on the recommendation from a couple friends here, I have deleted the photos and info until the coin is in hand. Sorry if it's confusing...guess I should have tempered my excitement and desire to share with everyone just a wee bit longer. Once it's here, I'll reinstate all the incriminating information! ~benjamin
Nah, that 42/41 (Merc) that you picked out of a junk pile in Massapequa remains in my memory.........
Yeah, that is the coin I think about when I put together my all-time dream cherry pick list. I think the only way this one tops that is if it goes MS64/65.
and if you receive the coin in the Ebay photos. sometimes sellers use stock photos , I know they are not supposed to but they do it anyway. I have made some really good deals myself from ebay sellers. I hope this deal works out for the best for you.
Well...I'd say that after having looked at probably 100,000 listings over the last two weeks (to find TWO major picks, one of which I did not win because eBay didn't register my bid) I can say that this seller doesn't seem to use stock photos. I can also say that I have also picked their stock before, having won a 1942 Proof Type 1 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-003. I'm hoping my good experience there carries over to this coin...hoping.
