I won this coin in an online auction recently. Bought on a whim, loved the countermark, no idea what it is, or where it fits into my collection which is a little haphazard at best....What is it please? Seller describes it as 19.3mm 4.25g across. Thanks
If I had to guess I'd say Roman Republic with counter stamp. About how much did you get it for? In that condition it would probaly go for a pretty penny.
I paid £34 GBP, but I really do not know its worth? I guess its what people want to pay at the time?? But on a side note.....remember the Gallic Mossy Bottom hoard coins I bought at £2 a piece last month?? Well, a DivoVictorinus eagle on globe reverse coin is about to end in 30 minutes and its on £160GBP!!!! Now thats what I call a mark up.
I do not recognize the type but the style screams 3rd century BC Sicily at me. I am not finding a fraction smaller than the hemilitron and the c/m pretty well destroys the reverse so I could be living in a fantasy. To me the coin is worth very little but the c/m is worth about what you paid. For more, research. I failed to find it easily but I was probably led astray by my feeling that the legend reads IEPON. There are several sites on Sicily but I do not know any of the owners well enough to ask a favor. You might try.
Wow, very cool countermark ... I can't tell you what it is, but I think Doug is probably in the ballpark (however, I just finished thumbing-through my CNG Handbook of Coins of Sicily => and sadly I could not find a match) good luck in your search ... I hope that someone swoops-in and solves the mystery
Pekka identified it for you at FORVM, in case you haven't noticed. That guy seems to have memorized every ancient coin ever issued.
Now that what I though was a pair of dolphins turns out to be an anchor, it makes more sense. Forvm is always the place to go for serious inquiries but many low end questions will be ignored there. They have many regulars who are seriously skilled. CT has more of a social crowd. I'll warn that they will probably be less receptive to your questions if they decide you are just a dealer looking to further your business. Since Forvm is a service of a dealer, they do not cater to his competitors. I feel guilty not buying more coins from Joe but he seems to prefer mainstream coins that are completely different than my interests. Forvm provides free webspace for several worthwhile educational pages and one, mine, that may not be what it once was.
For those interested, its been ID'd on another Forum as ...... THRACE, Apollonia Pontika. Mid 4th-3rd centuries BC. Æ 20mm (5.15 g, 11h). Laureate head of Applo right; c/m bust of Artemis / Anchor; IH to left, [crayfish] to right.SNG BM Black Sea 187; SNG Stancomb
Thanks for getting back to the Coin Talk gang (I appreciate that) => it's a very cool coin (the whole coin is very appealing, but man, I love that c/m)
ps. I am not just a dealer seeking to further my business. I sell coins and collect too, as most members here have probably done in the past. I have a passion for coins and I am in the early stages of learning about them....I hope that by having many pass through my hands I will learn quicker as I am a visual learner. Now this has been posted no doubt Forum will treat me less favourably, it probably had not crossed their minds til now!
